I have done private lessons, and group classes with Michael Westbrook. He is excellent at adapting techniques to my own physical abilities, or lack thereof. He is patient, skilled, and an excellent coach. the classes are well run, and his sense of humor makes every class fun. My children have also trained with Michael, and he is a superb children's coach. Generous with praise, and able to help them gain confidence as they learn practical and effective self defense, and self discipline.
Awesome place to learn BJJ applied to self defense and sport. Instructors take time to guide you through moves you have trouble with (especially if you are very uncoordinated like myself), and you never feel left behind.
No ego's on the mat either. New students do not get smashed by the higher ranking belts. The higher ranking students help you through your learning process while drilling and rolling (sparring).
I have been to other marital arts schools, gotten lazy, and stopped going in. As long as my credit card payments went through these other schools really didn't care. When I got lazy and took a two month break at MWBJJ I got a call from the head instructor making sure everything was ok in my personal life, and he encouraged me to come back in.
I have lived in three different states in the last 3 years and, in that time, have trained at multiple schools in each state - always searching for that "perfect" school that can compare to MWBJJ. Not a single school has come close. I have met very kind instructors, very helpful training partners, and have enjoyed the option of training BJJ 6 times a week at my current school. That said, I have never seen the same attention to detail in the explanation of techniques nor the same attention to each individual student that I experienced at MWBJJ. As a humble blue belt, I've questioned if maybe I was just biased in believing that MWSDA was really that much better than all other schools because of the camaraderie I experienced on top of their superior teaching methods. I no longer question this because at every single school I have attended, higher-ranking belts have instantly recognized that I had a particularly good guard game for my level. In some cases, they would even go so far as to ask me where I had learned this move or that and what it was called. I couldn't help but feel extremely lucky to have learned from the best. The instructors at MWBJJ implement a solution oriented approach to training meaning, they identify the greatest natural strengths of each student and teach them techniques that complement those natural abilities on top of teaching them basic jiu-jitsu maneuvers to ensure that, with practice, they will be calm and comfortable in every situation. Problems are not addressed as problems at this school. They are addressed as potential areas of both athletic and personal improvement. This is the heart of solution-focused trainers like Mr. Michael and Mr. Morris. Bruce Lee said, "Absorb what is useful, discard what is not, add what is uniquely your own." I never did the second at MWBJJ. I am not just a better student because of this school, I'm a better person because of this school.
As a total beginner at Martial Arts, I have greatly appreciated the patience and knowledge of the instructors here, as well as the teamwork and attitude of the students attending. I always feel comfortable at my level, while having positive examples of what to aspire to. Not to mention, no one has called me grasshopper yet!
I am 43 years old and have trained at the Westbrook Self-Defense Academy for just over two years and I can say that MWBJJ (Michael Westbrook Academy) provides some of the best training there is. Prior to signing up I had looked at other schools in the area and was fortunate to find Michael Westbrook and Morris Williams (both black belts) who provide solid technical understanding of the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Michael and Morris have helped me add some major polish to my game providing something that I had missed in prior training which is a solid foundation. I would recommend this place for both beginners and advanced, young and old.
