There are so many rehabs you can go to, it was hard for me to pick one. I didn’t even know where to start. I don’t know why I picked A Better Today but I did. I just called the number and told them I needed treatment. I had already lost my job and my girlfriend so I had no place to live. But I had an ultimatum from the judge after my third time in front of her. She said I could go to jail or rehab. I didn’t want to do either one but I definitely didn’t want to go to jail. At first my plan was to go to avoid jail. But after a few days, I started to realize that I really did want help. My therapist made me see that my mentality was being manipulated by meth. The longer I was clean, the more I wanted to be clean and A Better Today was there to support me every step of the way. I decided to go into their new sober living program after treatment. I live with people who understand what I’m trying to do. I’m working now and my mind is clear. I’m sharing my experience in case someone else is where I was and doesn’t know how to pick which rehab to go to. They all look the same online but A Better Today is the real deal.

I didn’t go through treatment at a Better Today but my daughters’ father my ex did. It was hard to agree to let them go to the family therapy because of some incidents when he was drunk that were traumatic for them. But it turned out to be the best thing for them and him. Their dad is actually rebuilding a relationship with the girls and they are so hopeful and happy after a session. Plus, their dad has been getting out and hiking with his friends. He said he learned about nutrition and strength training and how it helps him stay sober. But it has given him the energy to spend time with the girls too. They’re used to watching tv while they visit him and now they go to the park and to the trampoline jumping place. It’s like A Better Today gave them their dad back. It has been a journey as their mother but the girls deserve their dad. He has been sober for about 4 months now and he has moved into their new sober living program. With that much support around him and for a longer period of time, I think he has all the tools he needs to continue with this sober lifestyle. He has been going to 12 step meetings regularly and has a sponsor. He paid some child support for the first time in a long time because he finally stayed at the same job long enough to get a paycheck. He couldn’t have done it without A Better Today.

I used to blame everything and everyone for my addiction. But then God led me to A Better Today Recovery Services. They changed the way I look at the world. A Better Today taught me how to live without alcohol and reconnect with my higher power. So thank you to everyone there. I couldn’t have done it without you. Now I can say I’m truly happy and I haven’t had a drink in 331 days. I’m coming up on my one year and it just got me to thinking about where I was a year ago and where I am now. During treatment, my counselors helped me turn my life around. They helped me to see which parts of me were the addiction and which parts were actually me. I was able break the habits that kept me addicted and whenever I feel the pull back to alcohol (usually during times of stress or nervousness), I just go back to what I learned in treatment during my individual therapy sessions and the group therapy sessions. I know these people know what they’re talking about because I’m living proof. The more people that go through treatment at A Better Today, the more people will be clean and sober for a long time to come. I believe that from the bottom of my heart. One word of advice though. I know some people go to treatment for 30 or even 60 days, but if you can do it, stay for 90 days. The whole 90 really gave me the time to establish some habits and break off old relationships. If you can’t, use the outpatient services they offer. Because at least then you’ll have the support of people who can help you for longer.

A couple of years ago, my oldest daughter became pregnant with her first child. Beautiful Gracey Rose. She told me that I had to stop drinking if I was going to be in my granddaughter’s life. I wasn’t prepared for how hard it would be. I went into rehab, came out and relapsed 4 times in 10 months. I felt horrible when I relapsed, so I’d tell myself that I’d go on one last binge and start all over. My granddaughter is now 17 months old and before A Better Today, I had only met her twice. I decided to give sobriety one more try before giving up. and that’s basically because I just needed a place to spend the night. Full nights of sleep in a warm bed were far and few between by then. Fortunately, she found A Better Today for me. I went through treatment again, but this time it was different. I realized that I also suffer from Bipolar Disorder II, which was making it harder for me to quit drinking because when I felt bad, I drank. The difference was that they treated co-occurring disorders and they have a strong independent living program. I’ve never been sober for this many days in a row (151 and counting!) and I don’t think I could’ve accomplished it without A Better Today Recovery Services and their amazing counselors. Thank you, Charles and everyone in the inpatient program. You saved this happy grandpa’s life.
