Amazing view of the sunset or sunrise. You can see the bay area. Beautiful walk and great exercise.

There are many miles of trails, some multi-purpose, some for hikers only, and some for hikers and horseback riders. The views from High Ridge Loop Trail and Tolman Peak are stupendous. The park is well-maintained, if a bit rustic. Perfect for either daily dog-walking or serious hiking. Dry Creek Cottage Gardens, open only Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, is a delight. Different plants are growing and blooming through all seasons, but the rare irises scattered throughout the garden are a special treat in Spring. Don't miss the Garden.

Very very nice park, even if I live within five miles from here it was my first time today. Easy wide trail for the most part and then it starts climbing into the woods and that is a very nice part that reminds me of the lower elevations on the Alps. Close to the top there are less trees and a rather nice view.

We took the Tolman Peak Trail starting the parking lot near dry creek cottage and it was a delightful, dog friendly 6 mile moderate trail round trip. The bay experienced a monsoon week until 2 days ago so the road was a bit muddy. Had to cross 2 creeks on the trail so hiking shoes with somewhat waterproof features and trekking poles are recommended but not required. First half of the trail was a ranch with bunch of cows and horses and the other half was pretty steep trail on the hill, which makes a good balance of leisure and cardio. Once you step on the hill, the scenery becomes less shaded and more wide-angled. The bay just hit early spring but I saw a bunch of professional photographer groups shorting the stream and grasses already. When you gets higher and higher, there are much less people make there which is also my favorite part. This could be a substitute for mission peak if you would like to avoid crowds but still would like to get 1000ft elevation. Recommend to start early(we started at 9ish) before the sun rises high up and gets hot, but you can always turn back whenever you feel like, no pressure. The trail, combined with the south ridge trail, can make a loop. The trail itself, though, ends with a fence after you pass the tree at the highest point of the mountain.

One of the best hikes in the East Bay that offers great views and a wide variety of elevations for taking in the sights or getting some exercise. The Garin Park side is your classic picnic table and lake picnic area or access to a variety of trail heads with a paid entry parking lot or the south side which offers a free parking lot for taking hikes. Dogs are allowed off leash past the 2nd gate and a variety of trail forks allows you to create your own path and get some variety. The elevation can be steep so it is a little more effort than casual. Dress and bring water as appropriate. I highly recommend staying off the dirt trails after rain as the mud gets very thick and clumps very heavily on your shoes leading to a cement and lead footed experience. Plan to go after there is adequate sunshine or heat to h ave dried the path out.
