The park rangers are knowledgeable and love what they do, and the site is a lovely, well-maintained historic location. Definitely worth visiting if you are in the Martinez area. One can also find out more about the Port Chicago monument as well, which sparked a major turning point in not only the military's history, but the nation's.
Very cool place to visit! John Muir's house is very well kept, it's free to walk in, and the rangers are very nice people!
A fun historic East Bay site. Also free to visit. The John Muir house is in good shape and has some interesting rooms/history/artifacts. I believe it is 3 or 4 stories with the attic. You are allowed to walk around most areas. There is also a small guest house at the back of the property you can visit. Worth a quick visit if you're in the area.
Interesting house and 'working office' for a gifted writer of articles espousing the protection of America's natural treasures. You can learn a lot about the man here, and at nearby Muir Woods. This site is also the NPS guided tour starting place to visit nearby Port Chicago National Memorial. Call first to get on the tour.
Very hospitable and knowledgeable folks from the National Park Service. This is a free location and a good lesson in U.S. history. I recommend watching the 20 minute movie and if you time your visit correctly, the guided tour is quite interesting. If not, the self guided tour will take less than 30 minutes.
