I was at Afflerbaugh from Nov. '90 til Feb. '91... PAWNEE'S wassup !? lol.. I was part of the El Camino School, Crew for Special Kids... Working with those kids was a positive experience that I still carry til this day. Them other sukka's were doing the work crew... working the "McCloud" haha... you know who you are !
I spent Aug. 1982 to Nov. 1983 at Camp Paige as a counselor for the LACJPD. My responsibility was as night supervisor at Paige and occasionally at Afferbaugh. I had been a Sup. DPO for15 yrs. in a different State.
I can say with assurance that the education offered to the students was at a level with the best of the public schools in California. That education along with the work experience should have made it possible for the students to move on to a higher education and /or job preparation. One of the comments already made here, tells the story of too many of these young men.
So many asked for intervention, in their behalf upon release, to be sent out of the area, as far away as possible, to live with relatives or grand parents rather than have to go back to the streets and gangs which had helped spawn the enviroment and problems that brought them to Paige and Afferbaugh in the first place. Those young men for the most part are sharp, but they are also survivalist.
I often remember a young man who was a born leader and a scholar, whom I thought could make it at UCLA or any school of his choice, but one night while covering at Afferbaugh, I was doing a bed check and I did a double take as I came to a name I'd seen so many times before. I taped a knuckle on the bed frame and a startled young man sat up and looked me in the eye and said, Mr. P, I'm sorry to disappoint you, They took a shot at my brother and I had to back him up.
Neither one of them should have been placed back into the same fish bowl that they had initially come from.
I was there back in 1989 on 'Track III'. I loved that we got to go on fires & learn the things that are related. I still didn't learn my lesson when I got out. I spent the next 7 years in & out of county jail, until I finally surrendered my life to Jesus Christ. And for the past 18 years I have been able to do ministry with Jr & Sr High School Students.
I loved camp Paige. it turned. my life around back in 1987 good program. keeps. you bizzy & in shape had my crew 17-1 #1 for 8 mnths. straight
I love these 2 camps...I volunteered there for awhile & my brother was at Paige before he passed in 95
