I've been taking classes at Silanoe for about 3-4 months now, mostly jiu jitsu but also a handful of muay thai classes here and there. As a beginner, woman, and out of shape thanks to a year+ of quarantine, starting martial arts can be really scary and intimidating. I checked out a couple bjj gyms in the area but ultimately chose Silanoe because of the welcoming and supportive environment Professor Gino fosters.
You can tell they take safety and cleanliness super seriously. Mats are cleaned and disinfected multiple times a day. The instructor is always walking around making sure everyone is performing the technique correctly and with control. He even reminds us every day to buy/wear a mouth guard because teeth are important! This is also one of the few martial arts schools I've seen even attempt to take covid precautions, which was a major factor when I was deciding on a school.
Instruction is top-notch and classes are always geared towards the level of the students present that day. Even when the classes get crowded, there always seems to be a ton of personal attention. Prof Gino has a real skill in breaking down complicated techniques into easy to understand steps. Bonus points, there's also other ladies to train with and ladies-only classes on Fridays! :)
Started with no experience, little over half a year into training now and honestly the best investment I’ve made for my health & wellness.
First off, the Covid protocols from day 1 have been enforced from the strictest guidelines (training outside in the parking lot, mandatory temperature checks, hand sanitizing, and mask on at all times) to current guidelines. Most of the students here are fully vaccinated and STILL wear mask as advised.
Second, the cleanliness of the academy is grade A. Mats are swept and sanitized daily. Bathrooms cleaned daily. Floors and chairs cleaned daily. Also proper hygiene etiquette for the students is not only written on the board with steps but also highly encouraged.
Muay Thai/Kickboxing classes: healthy mix of beginners to advanced students. Not only is the coach constantly walking around to correct technique and form but beginners are encouraged to pair with someone more advanced so they are properly learning without getting hurt by another beginner. Open and honest line of communication between sparring partners are also highly encouraged to prevent injury. Proper gloves, shin guards, and mouth guards are also highly recommended.
Jiu-Jitsu classes: Professor Gino’s ability to teach, explain, give scenarios, and breakdown BJJ and grappling is next level. If you don’t understand, he will find a way to teach you.
Coach Chris with the kids class not only instills respect and the ability to listen as a student but also keeps a good rapport and encourages them.
Bottom line, this academy has became my second home. Every student, coach, professor, here is only trying to make each other better, on and off the mats.
My only regret is that I didn’t sign up sooner!
I started going to Silanoe Martial Arts since February 2021. I was looking for a new academy which follows the LA County Covid19 safety guidelines to keep their business open.
I had found Silanoe Martial Arts having all of their classes ( from kids to adult Bjj, no gi bjj, Muay Thai) held outside under a tent. Everyone would be wearing a mask for the whole class. They would take your temperature and spray hand sanitizer before every class and clean after every class They gave you an option of drilling with a live partner or a grappling dummy. Being in the medical field and working in a hospital during trying times. I felt really safe to train bjj again.
Not only do they maintain cleanliness when they had classes outside but they also maintain cleanliness now that all the classes are held indoors.
The other big thing that drew me to Silanoe is they offered a Fundamental Class. Great for those that are new to bjj or wanted to learn the basics.
I only have great things to say about Professor Gino and his wife Anna.
Professor Gino is a great professor who breaks down every technique so that it is easy to see and to understand that his students like me can drill it properly. I love the fact that he strings all his techniques for each class like a series. He also listens and answers all question. If a student was having a hard time with drilling a technique or seems lost , he will find time to help the students out. He also has positional sparring at the end of each class, which I like a lot.
I have my two teenage daughters enrolled in the Muay Thai classes which were mainly with adults. I was hesitant at first but after a few sessions Professor and the rest of the class made my daughters feel like a family and that they belonged. Correcting and helping them along the way.
No matter if you are a beginner or been practicing a long time and looking for a place to train. I highly recommend this place.
Not only will you be learning but also improving your skills at the same time. I love this place.
Great experience good workout.
