Russ has been my instructor for the past 11 years. His depth of knowledge is what sets him apart from other instructors. Russ understands the "why" behind every step of everything he teaches. The result is very efficient teaching that he can adjust for every student's body and/or skill level.
Russ understands and teaches not only the physical aspect of martial arts, but also the mental and emotional states that go along with physical success. Martial arts should have a positive influence throughout your life and this is a cornerstone of Russ Miura Jiu Jitsu teachings. Russ's teachings have made me a better person. I have seen his students consistently exceed their expectations in improving their bodies. I have also seen his students learn humility, confidence, patience, and leadership through jiu jitsu.
As for the gym itself, it is a wonderful environment to learn and train. Everything in the gym is brand-new and of the highest quality. The mats are cleaned several times a day. The floating foam sub-floor makes takedowns MUCH safer and more pleasant to train. The decor and vibe make the space very inviting. Students and visitors have a positive mood as soon as they step in the door.
Whether you are seeking instruction for you or your child, you are looking to be highly competitive in jiu jitsu and MMA, you want to improve your physical health, or you just want to learn the art of jiu jitsu, this is the best gym around. I have trained jiu jitsu all over CA, Hawaii, and even Europe. I have learned from world champions and some of the biggest names in BJJ. I feel confident saying that Russ's instruction is unique and something very special. I encourage everyone to come by the gym and see for themselves!
Love it!!! Russ is an awesome coach to my kids !!
Amazing with my son. They have become like family. ☺
My name is Brian B. Dungca and I go by Panda, I wrestled as a heavyweight for 4 years of high school. Since then, Jiu Jitsu has been a part of my life for 16 years. The last 8 years of my Jiu Jitsu Journey has been with Russ Miura.
Eight years ago:
I came to Russ Miura looking for a Jiu Jitsu Teacher.
I knew that the Armbar & the Triangle didn't work for me because of my size & I had accepted it.
I knew the idea of Jiu Jitsu was to submit your opponent with identical techniques that your teacher had shown you. Being submited was the last thing you wanted and that your teacher would be disappointed.
Eight years later:
I've learned that Russ is more than a Teacher. He is a Mentor. A teachers role is a formal presentation of information geared to pass a test. Mentoring is a partnership, a mutuality of trust & learning. It's when the Experienced shows the Less-experienced how to take information and turn it into knowledge.
Again Russ is a Mentor, he is also a friend, a confidant, a guide and an advisor.
I no longer accept that Jiu Jitsu doesn't work for me. When Jiu Jitsu doesn't work, there is always a step that I have overlooked. No matter how miniscule, once I've addressed it, Jiu Jitsu has always been there and has always worked for me. In my first day of class with Russ, I had executed the Armbar 3 times in live grappling.
I've come to realize that not only is Jiu Jitsu the Art of Combat. It is a Sport, it is a Martial Art; it is Art. Although the fundamentals are the same, as two paint brushes are the same; two Jiu Jitsu practitioners can be as different as are two painters. The movements can be fluid and organic, sometimes similar and sometimes dissimilar, sometimes quick and sometimes slow. I am the Artist of my Jiu Jitsu Masterpiece. The real disappointment in Jiu Jitsu is to be held back in this trap of priding oneself from never being submitted. The irony is, never being defeated while never moving on to the next level.
I've learned so much, I've refined my Jiu Jitsu, and I've opened my heart to love Jiu Jitsu more than I love to win. I could never have come so far in my Jiu Jitsu Journey without Russ Miura.
By the way, Russ gave me the nickname Panda after the movie Kung Fu Panda. I didn't understand why, as I never went to see the movie. When I finally viewed Kung Fu Panda, I understood the message and why I was given the nickname Panda.
