  In a nutshell: excellent espresso (consistently) served by somewhat reserved but still helpful employees.
  
  I'm not really certain what the deal is at Pannikin on Via De La Valley in Del Mar. The atmosphere of the place is nice, and the prices are right for a good cup of espresso, but the staff seem a little on the snooty side. They're willing to efficiently produce a cup of tasty espresso (probably my overall favorite hot soy mocha in the Greater San Diego area), but that's just it, they're just "willing," not enthusiastic. You know how occasionally you'll go into one of those Starbucks and you feel like you've made the employee's day just by showing up to order a latte or mocha? Yeah, you don't get that feeling here. You get more of the feeling like "we'll help you, but only as much as we have to." I don't know about you, but that attitude annoys me. Being a barista isn't a hard labor camp in Siberia, so don't act so tortured and put upon by your job (please!).

  OF the two or three times I visited, I found the service to be great and the quality of coffee excellent. I recommend this place for tourists like myself.

  Live music on Friday night's till 10. Great coffee!
