We set out to find a martial art for self-defense, and after checking out multiple dojos and martial arts, finally decided on Ventura Aikikai. The child and teen class instructors treat the students with respect while encouraging their best effort. Adult classes are offered at various levels, with two beginners/basics classes I greatly appreciate as a new student. Members bring their best selves to class and provide a supportive atmosphere, encouraging you to keep going. In addition to body arts, members may also learn jyo (wooden staff) and bokken (wooden sword), participate in a weekly zazen (meditation) session, and may be invited to practice Iaidō (swordsmanship).
