I learned both practical fighting/defense techniques and strategies as well as tips for situational awareness. Irvin is an experienced and ranked (black sash/belts) martial artist, so he knows what will incapacitate and cause serious injury to a would-be attacker. The opportunity to practice these moves against him, a big guy who knows how to inflict serious pain if he wants to was invaluable. Irvin gives real-time feedback exactly how the move would feel if he wasn't padded up, so that definitely helps to build confidence.
