Saint Malo's Chapel on the Rock

We drove up during a pop up spring snow storm. It was a magical scene....the snow, the small church. Gorgeous! We were so happy it was opened...a very friendly docent greeted us and shared a bit about the history including the visit from Pope John Paul!

This church looks like a fantasy cake. It's so cute and compact and perfectly situated on its rock platform. It was open for visitors the day we wandered by, and the volunteer inside was knowledgeable and let us ring the bell. The vistas all around the church are literally awe-inspiring, and it's easy to understand why someone would decide to build a church here. The only pity is that the windows facing the Rockies aren't really big enough to admire them out of, though perhaps that's because congregants would never pay attention to a sermon if they could admire that view while the priest was talking...? :)

We were out looking for the fall colors and passed by this chapel. Stopped to get photos and stretch out our legs. Ended up with a surreal image that I am very fond of.

A friend in Estes recommended we stop by Saint Malo's, and we're so glad we did. This is an incredibly beautiful place. There's something about the placement of the chapel on the rock, the vaguely Byzantine architecture, and the snow-covered slopes of Long's Peak looming in the background. We would have been happy to explore outside, but we were lucky enough to happen by when it was being tended by a volunteer. She told us a bit about the history of the place, and then let us go to the choir loft to ring the bell. I dropped a few bucks into the box by the door. Happy to support a place as special as this!
