Tallest Mountain in Boulder County. Be smart check the weather forecast beforehand, and bring a friend.
Great views and a very established trail network providing access to multiple peaks and climbing locations. A few places may be a scramble on Bear Peak. Definitely bring micro-spikes, or the like, if you go up in the winter. Trekking poles would also be handy for winter climbs. The trail is pretty busy, and you'll see plenty of trail runners. Parking available at the NCAR building/trailhead. Dogs are allowed on leash, and you'll see quite a few.
The quintessential Boulder hike. Even though South Boulder Peak is higher, Bear Peak has the best view in Boulder county. But, it's also the most strenuous hike in town.
Out of my three favorite peak hikes around: Green Mtn, Bear Peak, and South Boulder Peak, Bear Peak has the worst climb up and the best reward. Green Mtn has the most beautiful climb up, but the worst peak. South Boulder is in between for both counts.
Holy ahhh! It was beautiful! A little icy this time of year, and my buddy and I went up in our regular tennis shoes so it was a little treacherous. Basically had to slide the whole way off the top ridge and for most everything on Fern Canyon trail, but if you've got some proper gear, oh man, you shouldn't miss out.
This hike was difficult but worth it! I only gave it 4 stars because I like other hikes better. But I'd probably hike it again
