Rattlesnake Gulch/Crags Hotel Trailhead

Great trailhead. Definitely not easy, but very doable and worth it. Amazing views all around, a lot of shade as well which helps a lot in summer months. Between the views, the hotel ruins, and the continental divide, there’s really nothing bad to say here. I have heard it gets very crowded but I went on a beautiful September day and rarely came across people. Maybe I just got lucky.

Rattlesnake Gulch to the Crags Hotel Ruins and Continental Divide is a great hike. As an out-and-back you gain a lot of elevation outbound and have the benefit of gravity to bring you back.

The trail is nice and doesn’t have too many areas to slow you down and make you pick your route. There is plenty of shade along the way and magnificent views. Be aware that there is no signage at one point where there are trails in many directions and a bridge off to the right. Take the bridge. It is the most direct route to the Crags Hotel.

My favorite hike in El Dorado Canyon is the Rattlesnake Gulch Trail. It takes you through the forest and up to the continental divide outlook which has amazing views towards the mountains and great views towards the front range as well. You can also see the train that runs up on the ridge from this trail which is pretty neat to see in person! One word of caution, there was one visit we had where 4 cars were broken into so just as with all parks, don't leave your valuables in your car! Enjoy this beautiful park and all it has to offer... especially after a fresh snow where the snowflakes cling to the forest and mountains!

This is our favorite hike in Eldorado. Lots of shade, pretty views, and the hotel ruins are an unexpected find. It takes about 2 hours to do the crags ruin and continental divide overlook. I've never done the full Rattlesnake Gulch hike as it's often closed for Golden Eagle nesting. Good hike for dogs and kids. A little steep and rocky in some areas but just go slow on the way down. Bring water and a picnic to enjoy at the top or down by the river! Come early to get parking and avoid heat, but there is a free shuttle at 36 and Mcasiln as well.

Great, family friendly hiking trail that gives you a lot of those awe inspiring and awesome Colorado views. Be careful as there are still some steep drop offs with all those great views. Also, the trail does get more challenging after the turn off from the Fowler trail, but still doable for most people in decent shape. Enjoy, have fun, and be safe out there. Oct 2021
