My grandmother was discharged from a terrible rehab center last week and we decided to have Denver Hospice perform 7-day a week home visits. After battling with insurance issues, rehab administration issues, and of course my grandmother's declining state, I cannot express how amazing the support and care with Denver Hospice is. We have had a hard case due to financial resources and interpersonal resources, but Denver Hospice made the transition incredibly easy for me.
They put an emphasis on family and caregiver support. As I have been the primary caregiver for my grandmother for the past two years, I was incredibly nervous to have my grandmother home with me post-stroke. I felt lost and hopeless to take care of someone quickly ailing. DH put my worries to ease. Not only is the service covered by Medicare, but the care is immensely thorough and compassionate. The first night in, she had a restless night and I had to call an on-call nurse for support at 5 am. They came within an hour of my call and the RN sat with me until a plan was put in place. He left only when it was appropriate. A few days later, despite daily visits from RNs and CNAs, she quickly became worse. I called another emergency RN to come assist me with an issue and she suggested we send my grandmother to the in-patient care center. They transported her only a couple of hours later.
Now I am here and we are able to be family instead of caregivers. And, oh boy, this place is spacious, immaculate, accommodating to family and patients, and quiet. We have a back patio facing a garden (my grandmother would love if she could see it), there are several community rooms, a community guitar and piano. I wasn't expecting it, but I couldn't have asked for anything more.
This is really the best place and the best team for your loved one. Sometimes emergency calls can take a while if you have the service at home, but they really are doing their best. There is a lot of sad hospices and terrible rehabs out there. Take your chance with this one. It's worth it.
