The park is a relatively short drive from Denver and is easily accessible. There are two main loop trails, each about 3 miles or so and with moderate level of difficulty, that take you through the inner canyon. Nice hike, although not as scenic as most other mountainous state parks in Colorado. If you're not interested in the canyon trails you can stay on the main paved trail that starts from the parking lot and loops around. It's pretty short and easy to hike, and has a few observation points where you can view the canyon from above.
Castlewood Canyon is a small canyon that one hike down and around in about an hour. The view is gorgeous with water flowing along the path. Further down the trail, there is an old dam ruin that extends the hike for another hour. For a short drive from Denver, this park is definitely worth an afternoon trip.
First time here. If you have any interest in geology, native vegetation, birds and birdsong; then this place should be on your list of places to visit. Absolutely gorgeous. Cherry Creek flows at canyons base, and has cut a deep gulch. Waterfalls, caves, damn ruins, old homestead and natural rock bridges. There are several short, easy hiking trails and a more challenging 2 mile hike through the inner canyon. Photographers, birdwatchers, amateur geologist will not be disappointed with this trip.
This state park is so lovely. It was $8 and definitely worth it. There are restrooms and picnic tables and a lot of great terrain and views.
Great place for a pleasant hike! The trail was fairly easy, very well kept, and beautiful the entire way. I went all the way to the dam ruins which were really cool to see. You get out of the canyon and in the open for a while before you come to the ruins so bring plenty of sunscreen if you plan to go all the way to the dam. Most of the time while in the canyon I didn't get a whole lot of sun exposure so I didn't need sunscreen. Overall a very beautiful hike designed for beginners. It is a State park though, so don't forget that you have to pay to get in.
