I called the SS line and of course was on hold for an hour before I gave up. I arrived at the Alameda location at 3:15pm, and was seen and taken care of almost immediately— I am driving out at 3:30pm. Incredibly easy & I am in disbelief after all the horror stories! Both the security guard & the employee who assisted me were clear & kind.

Note: I brought with me my completed SS-5 form, and had my ID & marriage certificate in hand. (Didn’t need my passport or SS card after all, FYI.) Walked in with a mask (which really are 100% required). So being prepared probably helps, but still impressed by the efficiency.

Be sure to check with Google Maps before coming out. In spite to the sign on Alameda pointing to Social Security, you can't get to the office from Alameda. From Alameda, turn north on Beach, right on Alkire, right on Mississippi, then an immediate right onto an unmarked driveway.

When we arrived about 20 min before opening, there was already a queue of a dozen people with more lining up behind us. A woman came out at 9:00 and separated people based on the assistance they needed.

Then they let one party at a time into the building. Every couple of minutes, they'd let another in. They printed a ticket then sent us to a check-in window. The people there were courteous and efficient.

There were about 30 seats but only 20 people allowed in the building. More than that waited outside. Six windows but only about 3 or 4 were open. They called peoples' numbers based on what they needed. Restrooms were available.

Two of us were applying for Social Security and Medicare. I guess that needs special attention so we had a wait of about two hours. They finally called us to a cubicle in the back office. The rep was friendly and efficient.

Don't know about every one else but for us, they didn't need documents except photo ID. I was prepared with my most recent W-2 (current employer's name and address) but wasn't prepared when they asked for the name and address of my employer before that (no big deal). Almost forgot to bring a voided check but didn't. They need that for direct deposit.

They asked us to verify our Social Security earnings statement for accuracy. Do you know what you made 45 years ago?

Went on a Monday afternoon around 😌2pm. Waited in outside line approximately 35mon. employees came out,a asked reason for visit. Asked if filled forms online for those that hadn't they brought forms to fill while waiting. I was pleasantly surprised to get such kind and courteous behavior after all bad talk.of SS office. I had my business completed and on my way home by 3:15.

I went on a Monday morning at 9:15am and was done by 9:45am. There was a short wait outside and a guy came out to explain the process to everyone then started us on our appropriate paperwork. Kris helped me with my name change, she was very nice. Overall great experience - I was surprised how easy and quick this was. If you're there for a name change due to a marriage, I recommend filling out the application online. Also, you'll need to wear a mask.
