So gorgeous and serene. I used to come here all the time in high school and now that I've moved, I find myself missing my little hideaway more and more

Excellent location to completely immerse yourself into the beautiful Florida outdoors. The waters from the swollen St John's River has finally subsided and the cattle have moved down to the river again. This makes wildlife spotting much easier, since the cows aren't moseying around mooing and making noise. Birds, insects, small game, deer, gators, you name it, it's here! Take just a few minutes while you are wandering about and just listed. Stand still, look out at the scenery in front of you and just take it in. Silence is golden, my friends, and the only noise you'll hear is the air-boats here and there off in the distance. There are vehicle trails as well as countless footpaths to keep your feet moving. If you're looking for a good hike on some solid ground, this is your place. Dip off the beaten path into one of the many off shoot game trails, and chances are you'll find some beautiful natural surroundings. Definitely a great hike and an excellent location to dive into the Florida outdoors and find your peace and quiet.

Canaveral Marshes Conservation Area is an excellent location for birding. On yesterday's hike, I saw a Bald eagle, a red shouldered hawk, several species of wading birds, and flocks of White pelicans. Be aware that once inside the gate, you may see cattle grazing as this is all pasture land. Mind your step because there are a lot of cow patties to potentially step in. If you walk all the way to the St Johns river, a distance of about 2 miles from the trail head, you will probably see alligators. They are very common here up to 12 feet in length. I brought my fly rod with me and fished the river down by the 7 Palms shelter and caught American Shad, Blueback herring, Redbreast sunfish, Bluegill, Channel catfish and Black crappie. The fishing is usually excellent this time of year. For the best fishing from the banks, check the river stage levels on the St Johns River near Christmas Florida web site. It should be below five feet, preferably lower. If it is higher than 5 feet, you will have to wade past knee deep to the best fishing areas and that is something you probably don't want to do with the numerous alligators present. Also, make sure to bring plenty of water as there is very little shad once you get near the river. Wear sunscreen and dress appropriately for the weather conditions. Air boats are popular on the river section here and several tour operators launch from the SR 50 boat ramp approximately 6 river miles to the north. You will probably also see helicopter training in the area so don't be alarmed you see one doing maneuvers and practicing skills. If you come prepared, you will have a great day!
