A good place to hike for a few hours. We didn't see much wildlife although the interpretive center had many displays of the wildlife seen in the preserve.
For the most part, the preserve is wide open fields with some stands of pine or cypress. Go on a cooler day and take a hat.
Nice easy hike. About a mile walk to get to see Lake Russel one of the few lakes with no houses on its banks! Lots of native plants, use the shoe brush if you came from a different trail to remove any seeds that may be on shoes!
If you're looking for a place off the beaten path with little to no interference from people, this is it. Absolutely gorgeous and wild if you like that kind of thing. There was a ranger on duty. Garbage cans NOT overflowing. Bathrooms were well kept. Beautiful and peaceful. As a bonus, inside the quaint building, was a small natural history museum of sorts, filled with everything from literature to animal ID's. As a tourist, I was very happy. BTW, wear your hiking boots, as the trails are long.
This reserve was very nice. Short hikes with some great lake and wildlife views. Wouldn't be great on a really hot and sunny day as there isn't a lot of shade. Also, they close so early so call ahead when planning a trip.
My friend and her two daughters went early in the day. Packed our picnic basket and headed out into the Wilderness. Counted many animals and bird species. Saw an Eagle.
Several live in the area. Fascinating creatures to watch. Making plans to go on Valentine's weekend. Got to check on the Swamp Buggy. Loved it all.
