I’ve been seen by Dr Gross for over 20 years. We have gotten through all the highs and lows very successfully.

Dr. Gross is a wonderful psychiatrist, and the office staff has always been extremely helpful and friendly. They understand if you have to cancel a few hours before due to accidents/ unforeseen circumstances, etc. I drive for an hour- at the least- for my appointments here, and it is always worth it. I've never been asked to pay for missed appointments despite having several over the years.

Dr. Gross himself is very empathetic and such a good listener. He does not prescribe "whatever you want"...he uses his judgement and the patient's experiences to determine what is appropriate, if anything. He gives useful advice and makes suggestions that you wouldn't normally think of.

Someone made the assertion that he goes along with whatever you tell him (like self-diagnoses)...well of course he believes what his patients tell him! How ridiculous and useless would it be for a doctor in the mental health field to assume the patient lies?! All mental health professionals have to use their own judgement as well as the patient's claims in order to figure out what that patient may be experiencing. If you lie to your mental health doctor, you're sabotaging yourself, and you cannot assume that your doctor can read your mind. I'd recommend taking along someone who can provide another viewpoint to the doctor, if one suspects that they're not seeing the problem clearly themselves. I regularly do.

I'm glad I found Dr. Gross, and have never regretted switching to him, despite the distance.

I’ve been working with Dr. Gross for about a year+. He is better than any other psychiatrist I have worked with thus far (~9 years of psychiatric treatment). He was the psychiatrist I saw after being baker acted and having an awful experience with a former psychiatrist (Dr. Luis Chaves Villamil—DO NOT SEE THIS DOCTOR). I will list the pros and cons which will hopefully benefit and inform those looking for a reliable psychiatrist.

Pros: Never cuts visits short and often goes over allotted time when needed and NEVER has charged extra for the time as nearly every psychiatrist I’ve had. He is incredibly intelligent and explains things thoroughly, yet in an understable manner. This is extremely comforting knowing why he is prescribing the medication and feeling informed about your treatment. I truly feel like him and his office staff cares about my wellbeing and have often gone way beyond what they are required to in order to help because they do recognize we are paying quite a bit for treatment. For example, while dealing with applying for disability through my workplace (a very stressful situation), Dr. Gross sent over notes and his staff (Marge, who is so incredibly wonderful) took care of it as to relieve me of the stress on multiple occasions. Burgundy always recognizes me when I come in and is often helpful and very prompt. He also works with my psychologist to find the best methods of treatment for me, and has often asked about my wellbeing when I was unable to see him due to lack of funds. He also called in several prescriptions for me when I was unable to make/pay for the appointment, so I was able to continue with my medication. When medications have been too expensive and were not covered by my insurance, he would give me as many samples as he was able so I was able to try the medication. He has also given me so much information about alternative options for paying for medication, stating he would work and consult with public mental health center psychiatrists to ensure they were aware of my condition, treatment and medications and that this would be a way I could get treatment with having just lost my job. He also gives me many life tips (jobs to apply for, art I’ve inquired about, etc.). Treats patients like people, which is not a given for most psychiatrists or doctors in general. Makes you feel very comfortable asking questions.

Cons: I believe it has been evident for quite some time that I have a mood disorder and am on the bipolar spectrum. I believe I was originally being treated for major depressive disorder, and my episodes were largely disregarded based on the medications I was/am being prescribed. The amount of medications I have had to go through have been.... extensive. I went in vocalizing how SSRI’s and SNRI’s have not worked for me in the past. I was put on several (which he stated had different properties) which did not work, and always had adverse side effects I stated I previously experienced. Certain medications that worked extremely well for me were discontinued (gabapentin, adderall) and often shoots ideas down when asking to return on them. The mood stabilizer I am on is lamictal, and I cannot say there has been discernible improvement based on medication. I am confused as to why I am not being prescribed medications that once benefitted me. In addition, with the amount of suicidal thoughts/ideations along with mood swings, I’m unsure why I’m not being prescribed lithium. I’m sure he has his reasons, but stabilizing my mood would sure be nice, as I’m currently unable to work due to my episodes. ***The initial appointment was very expensive, currently running at $600. Each follow up appointment is $185. There is no payment plan offered for the visits. He does not accept insurance.***

Overall, I am very happy working with Dr. Gross. Every doctor and office will have pros and cons. The office staff may not always respond in a manner that’s suitable for those with mental health issues over the phone, but are still wonderful. If you have the money, he is absolutely worth it.

Dr. Gross is, by far, one the most competent and empathetic psychiatrists I've seen in a long time. I am extremely surprised to see a couple of negative reviews, so I feel like I need to inform people reading the posts of my experience.

    1. Contrary to another reviewer's opinion, Dr. Gross does not give patients "whatever they ask for." He does not put a band-aid on the illness, but rather attempts to find the underlying cause and treats accordingly. He is careful and thorough with his examinations and, with patient input prescribes what he feels would be most beneficial. He does not limit his care by taking certain medications off of the table, but also will not just prescribe a medication because a patient requests it. Certain doctors do not prescribe controlled substances at all. Dr. Gross does prescribe them if he feels they will be effective and is not careless when doing so.

    2. The same reviewer I mentioned above commented that the charge of $150 is ridiculous and that Dr. Gross is money hungry. Because of the level of care I feel that I am getting an awesome deal at less than $200 a month. Dr. Gross does not accept insurance, so it only makes sense that the visits cost what they do. He is not "money hungry." In fact he is the opposite. During my very first appointment he told me that once the medications started working and I was stable he would would schedule the appointments every two to three months instead of once a month. He understands that it can be difficult pay for monthly appointments and will still continue to refill the medications at no cost between appointments

    3. In my opinion the receptionists are awesome. They have always been helpful and are flexible with appointment times. I have not had any bad experiences with them at all.

    4. Because I have an issue with being assertive and articulating exactly how I feel, he was more than happy to let my girlfriend sit in on the appointment. I was very grateful for this and she appreciated the invitation

I would absolutely recommend Dr. Gross to anyone who has been unsuccessful in their treatment with other providers, as I have. He caught things that I had overlooked for years and I am lucky to have found him. He speaks to you as an equal and very willing to put in the work to help in any way he can
