She spent months living with the Long family (their homestead was just east of the cemetery) learning what life in the big scrub was like. Just north of the cemetery is the sink hole the Long family used as a source of water, which is the model for the sink hole in the novel as well. The hike is not difficult, but you might want to avoid walking in the summer, during the heat of the day. Bring some water, a snack, as well as a copy of The Yearling. Have a wonderful walk!”
