We've been multiple times to Cumberland and always enjoy it. There's a lot to see, a lovely beach, and wild horses. We got to see the birth of a foal this time around which was really neat. Bring water and snacks with you and sunscreen!
Plan ahead! I wanted to see the north end of the island, but I wouldn't recommend it. Plum orchard was amazing the guided tour by Bob was fantastic. It's a gorgeous old mansion, that said I don't think there's any reason to go past there. I couldn't find my way on the north end and there were several trees down across the road and trails, its apparent no one goes out there. When you're looking on the map take note the water glasses are both potable and non-potable. I definitely recommend a bike to get around. If you're not taking a bike definitely plan on staying the night, everything is spread out enough you would have to be jogging to see even half of the island in a day.
Definitely lives up to its reputation for beauty and remoteness (while still offering limited cellular service). We are staying at the Stafford Beach camp ground under a canopy of live oaks and pine tree. We can hear waves crashing from the tent. There is a lot of wild life including armadillos, turkeys, raccoons, snakes, lizards and horses. The bathhouse is adequate with cold showers and flush toilets.
Pack as lightly as you can, especially if you are staying beyond Sea Camp. No bicycles are available for rent on the island; the video on the website is out of date.
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Wish the instructions were posted more clearly on site as to where to go for what and when but staff helped through all that once arrived.
A unique NPS site to visit. Great day visit using phone app for interpretive tour. Great beach n seashore w lots of historical significance
