Don Beto Transmission And Auto Sales

It was late morning on September 5, 2019. A friend and I were making our sad way to a gas station in Hammond when we happened upon Don Beto Transmissions and Auto Sales. We had spent the morning attempting to get the transmision in our 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier serviced - with no success that fit within our limited budget:

Transmission shop #1 gave us a test drive, noted the hard shift in our automatic and quoted us an $800 price for a rebuilt trans with installation labor an unspecified extra.

Transmission shop #2 refused to do work on the problem citing prior bad experiences with customers who were reluctant to pay for repairs that resulted in complete immobilization of their autos.

Transmission shop #3 could only replace fluid and filters but suggested that our problems were much greater than could be resolved by that simple procedure. They were kind enough and honest enough to tell us to take our car elsewhere.

Transmission shop #4 asked only that we leave our car in their hands for five hours or more before obtaining an appraisal of the problem and an estimate of the cost of repair - to be accomplished with 3 days of agreeing to let them undertake the work. A transmission tuneup (with no extra labor or parts) would cost a minimum of $200. The cost in time to me was not a consideration of theirs, or a concern.

Then Don Beto Transmission and Auto Sales. It sits quietly on Indianapolis Boulevard and we stopped there more by accident than design. A mechanic mamager) came out to our car, obtained what little info I could give them about the sudden onset of the hard shift which was driving me nuts, and called a second gentleman to our aid. This mechanic shooed us into the Don Beto Office, gave us seats, then took the car for a test drive. He returned within 5 minutes, popped the hood, then jacked up the car and scooted underneath. Ten minutes later, he took the car away for a second test drive - then came back to invite me to test drive it. The car performed perfectly. Moreover, a "CHECK ENGINE" light that had coincided with the hard shifting transmission was now out.

The Don Beto owner/manager/mechanic refused payment (or tried to). I forced cash into his hands and gave him some transmission fluid and a gasket kit which a prior day shop had urged upon me before disappearing.

Don Beto Transmission and Auto Sales demonstrated concern, involvement, honesty and technical skill, all displayed with gentle humor and compassion for a klutz (me) who was ripe to be plucked, and returned my old Betsy to its 64000 miles form and glory.

I'll tell you this. From my experiences of today I know that you CAN do a hell of a lot worse getting your transmission serviced elsewhere, but you CANNOT do better than Don Betos.

They've done good work on my 2002 Pontiac Bonneville. I've been bringing my car here for about a year. Reasonable prices any problems they fix it.
