The only place I could find in Chicago with freshly made masa for tamales. If you're looking for good fresh masa, come here. Don't consider any other places: this is the best one you're going to find.
I was in town for the holidays and was annoyed with every hispanic grocery only offering frozen masa for tamales or the powdered maseca bags. I'm used to grocers that make fresh tortillas offering fresh masa during tamale season.
Luckily I found Cecy's with an online search and got masa that was made that morning. I can't believe it was that hard to find in a city like Chicago, but I'm glad these folks are around.
About the masa and the business: they're open only in the morning and early in the day. Get there early and get it while it's fresh. The masa was too sticky for my taste but the flavor was incredible. I will gladly deal with the annoying stickiness for the flavor. Given the stickiness, the masa was quite greasy. Be prepared for this when cooking. Wrap your tamales well and layer them with this in mind. It's not so greasy that it'll make a huge mess but you could get a lot of the lard in your water if you're not careful about wrapping and layering properly on your steamer.
Best masa in the Chicago area. I've been for years
The best place to go for Masa ( corn dough ). I go and shop here anytime my family wants to have homemade tortillas, the quality of the masa is the best I've ever tried! I've been going here for years and I love it! They also sell tamales and anything you need to make them as well.
Best most delicious tamales ever?!
Excellent Masa for tamales. I have bee going there for the last 20 years.
