We feel truly blessed to have Stephanie as our 7 year old son’s therapist. Not only has she helped significantly reduce his speech disfluency, but she has empowered us with tools on how we can help him at home.
Stephie Hirsh has worked with my 18 year old son, Erik, who stutters, for close to 10 years. Erik is a confident and thoughtful person with a large social circle heading into his college years. Most importantly, he is able to communicate and advocate for himself. He wasn’t always this confident communicator. His work with Stephie over the years, as he’s moved through different stages of life, is one of the main reasons he’s confidently heading off into this next stage of life. Stephie is one of those special people you feel lucky to find. She is a gift to the Chicago stuttering community; she's involved, educated and always on top of the latest research. What is so special and unique about Stephie is her ability to connect with kids and teenagers, and let them know they're not alone.
Stephie's approach to speech therapy is both effective and reflective. While she incorporates different techniques to use during everyday speech, she also makes sure to discuss the mental side of stuttering. Accepting that you're going to stutter and being OK with it is a concept we discussed that helped me be more comfortable around speaking. With Stephie, being a confident communicator is the key. There is no cure for stuttering. Being confident and in control of your emotions are just two of the many key topics I learned during my time with Stephie. These are aspects of our speech we can control and that's what Stephie did such a great job of driving home. I would recommend her to anyone looking to be a more confident communicator.
My 6-year-old daughter has been seeing Stephie once a week for the past several months and we've seen marked improvement, so I can certainly attest to her talent and expertise. Not only has Stephie helped us to decrease my daughter's stuttering and improve her ability to communicate, but she's also offered us thoughtful, helpful techniques for home. My daughter loves Stephie's humor and she easily responds to her kind heart, which makes working with her feel less like a chore and more like something she looks forward to each week.
Stephie is an excellent speech language pathologist (SLP). The heavy burden that I was carrying surrounding my stuttering was significantly lightened due to my work with her. She helped me reach a greater place of confidence and acceptance, while also providing me with a tool kit for those less fluent days. Her kind spirit facilitated a safe and effective environment for therapy.
