We love taking a drive out to Cataract Falls State Park. Nice small park. If you are looking for a lot of hiking trails, this is not the park to go to. We go just to see the falls and the quietness. A good place to contemplate life, relax and enjoy God's wonders.
Close parking and easy access to see the falls. There's a trail between the upper and lower falls. There's also a picnic area and picnic tables on the covered bridge and nearby. I saw a playground near the entrance and restrooms but didn't use them. The only negative on the day we went is there was a lot of trash, everywhere. I saw trash on the rocks just below the falls, around the designated viewing areas, even a full bag thrown behind a bush. I would normally start picking things up but much of it was beyond easy reach, just wish people would be more respectful of this area and not litter. Oh, and there's a big public boat launch on the lake nearby so you could launch kayaks or whatever you have and paddle up to the lower falls. I saw places just down stream where you could land and have a picnic.
We enjoyed looking at it, but I wouldn't say that it's worth it unless you already have an annual pass. I don't think it would be worth the $7 gate fee. The falls are pretty, but if you follow the rules you cannot get up very close to them. There's not much to see other than the two falls.
Beautiful area for walking/trails and the falls are such a beautiful surprise with a couple of areas to use as vantage points. If it's your first visit you can easily spend a couple of hours here relaxing, exploring and taking a break. There are also a lot of sassafras plants here so if you want to smell/taste fruit loops (Google it!) go for it!
