Recently I had been experiencing shoulder pain after an athletic injury. I contacted Cara Atwell from GOfit Physical Therapy and I cannot say enough amazing things about Cara and the practice she has with her husband.

*Cara was able to see me at a time and place that was convenient to my schedule.
*Cara gave me 1-on-1 treatment, providing me all of her attention for one hour sessions.
*I was blown away by the knowledge and experience Cara has, as well as, the kindness and care I received.
*I am now pain-free and the improvement from my sessions with her has allowed me to return to all of my activities (including my every-day profession: teaching dance in a high school).

I was also very pleased to learn that Cara has an extensive dance background, growing up dancing with the AA Co. school system and minoring in dance at UVA. This experience allowed her to better understand me as a dancer and what my profession requires of me.

I could not be more relieved to know that I can go to GOfit for any injuries or pain that I may experience in the future. Cara and her husband are extremely personable, knowledgable, and experienced. I highly recommend Cara and Kyle as physical therapists for any injuries or pain that you have.

I have seen Kyle on and off over the last couple years for a few issues; strained neck, tweaked shoulder, and chronic shin splints. As an athlete who has been going hard for over a decade getting injured comes with the territory.

Kyle is not the first physical therapist I have ever seen, but he will definitely be the last, as he is now my go-to-guy for the next time I inevitably get hurt. What sets Kyle apart from the other physical therapists that I have seen is convenience and how he can relate to me.

Because Kyle is an out of network provider I don’t have to jump through hoops (go to my primary care physician three times just to hear what I already know) in order to see a physical therapist. If I’m hurt I can make an appointment with GoFit and get treated, it’s that easy.

What really sets Kyle apart from other physical therapists is that he is an athlete himself and understands the frustration that comes with having to take time off from training or not being able to go 100% because of an injury. When I was hurt Kyle knew that I was eager to get back to training and got me healthy quickly. He also provided me with techniques that I could incorporate into my training to strengthen those problem areas and ultimately prevent the injuries from reoccurring. If you are an athlete who is injured or someone who just wants to get back to doing something they love, Kyle is definitely the man to see!

The bottom line of this review is that I think Kyle is awesome and can't recommend him highly enough. But to give a sense of where that's coming from, here's a little background: When I was in my early 20's, I started experiencing chronic pain in my hips. Over the course of 7 years, I saw several orthopedists, a physiatrist, and a rheumatologist and was given a different diagnosis by each. I also did at least five full courses of physical therapy. Although all the PTs I saw seemed competent and professional (and in fact I really liked several of them), the same thing would happen each time: I would see them for about 6 months (doing all exercises as prescribed) and would maybe experience a little bit of improvement, but overall not much would change. The PT would then say something along the lines of, "I'm really sorry. I don't know what is going on for you. Things should be getting better with what we're doing, but they're not, and I don't know why. I've exhausted every tool in my toolbox, so it doesn't make sense for you to come see me anymore." Over time, the activities I was able to do became more and more limited, eventually getting to the point where I couldn't even walk a half mile without pain. Always having been pretty athletic, it was awful being so physically limited at such a young age. But what was even more upsetting was that no one seemed to understand why it was happening. I was starting to feel like maybe it was all in my head or something.

That was the space I was in when I started working with Kyle. From the get-go, he was different than other PTs that I'd worked with. He made it clear all along that he definitely believed there was something physically going on for me and that he would help me get to the bottom of it, regardless of how long it took. I also consistently felt like my care was individualized - it wasn't based on what "should" work in a given situation; Kyle was actually responsive to and made adjustments based on what was and wasn't working. When, a few months into working together, we hit a plateau, he responded differently than any other PT I'd worked with previously - rather than giving up and saying he couldn't help me, he sought consultation from multiple colleagues. Together, they determined I had an underlying condition that was keeping typical techniques from working and referred me to an orthopedic surgeon who confirmed the diagnosis (one I hadn't gotten before). About 9 and 7 months ago, respectively, I underwent surgery on each of my hips to correct the issue.

After the surgeries, I worked with Kyle in rehab 4+ hours a week for about 5 months, and I have to say, he made what could've been a miserable process both rewarding and fun. Interpersonally, he's a great balance of warm and professional, with a really wonderful sense of humor. He's extremely knowledgeable, but never talked down to me and was always willing to openly answer questions I had about what was going on with my body, why things might be feeling a certain way, etc. He was also incredibly supportive and encouraging throughout the process. I felt like I had a cheerleader by my side the whole time, someone who really cared that I be able get back to doing the things I love. And that, by and large, has happened: I'm back to going to the gym several times a week, doing yoga here and there, and walking a mile and a half to and from work every day. Things aren't 100% perfect with my hips, but they are *infinitely* better than they were pre-surgery, and they're still improving all the time. So, as I'm sure is clear from this review, I'm incredibly grateful to Kyle and really, truly would recommend him to anyone!

p.s. While I haven't worked directly with Cara, she was in the same practice where I saw Kyle, so I got to know her and observe her style a bit too. All of her clients seemed to love her, and even though I wasn't her client, she always went out of her way to chat with me. She was super-warm and encouraging, and I have no doubt that she would be excellent to work with as well!
