Beautiful hike along the Gunpowder. Some flat, some not.
An unforgiving but rewarding trail
The entire Gunpowder South Trail is worth hiking. The Masemore section is especially enjoyable as most of it is riverside. Eagles, beavers and wildflowers are around for those with a sharp eye. Hemlock Gorge can be strenuous for those not in shape, but worth the effort, just take your time and enjoy the hike.
This hemlock forest is rather interesting. It lies on the North facing slope of the Gunpowder River. Because of the reduced sun exposure it has a more Northern ecology than neighboring areas. It is interesting to cross the river and see the change in flora on the warmer, sunnier south facing slope. The trail along the riverside is a nice place for a day hike. Bring the dog and watch the Kingfishers and Herons, the Beavers, Water Snakes, and the variety of other animals that live in and around the river.
Wish I could give it more stars. The best hiking in Northern Maryland can be found right here.
