  This is a nice quiet nature area in the county except during summer months when thrre are frequently school age children learning. Then, not so quiet.

  This is an excellent state park. A visitor center explains why the swamp and its flora is here so far north. The park is also an injured raptor sanctuary. The elevated boardwalk takes you through the swamp but the access stairs are tricky.

  It is a great time everytime we go, but this trip we surprisingly saw a snake during our hike. I also saw lots of racoon foot prints in the mid under the walking path. It's a good place to spend the afternoon.

  BaldCypress swamps are a distinctly unique feature of the Southeast U.S.coastal province. The BaldCypress Tree is closely related to the Redwood & Sequoia trees found out West --- kind of a swamp version if you will! BaldCypresses can grow to massive proportions & live over a thousand years! Sadly over 90% of these amazing trees have been logged over the years so the few remaining tracts are special places of rare beauty! Battle Creek Cypress Swamp is the most northern grove of BaldCypress trees in the East & is easily accessible - a stone's throw off of Rte4 just west of Prince Frederick in Calvert County. It's a quiet respite of natural beauty unlike any place else nearby! Friendly park staff & a wide range of educational displays are available at the visitors center. I love spending a few hours here while taking a break driving through Southern Maryland!

  The ranger there was very knowledgeable about the area wildlife. Couple of nice trails through cypress stand.
