I love the outdoors! This place is one of the Hidden gems right smack in the middle between Virginia and Maryland both sides are awesome. If you like the outdoors and going hiking or on Trails you would love this place. Lots of history and beautiful scenery.
Always a great choice for either a short or long day hike. Great views, great trail. I've been coming here since I was very young, wish I could visit more often!!
Was introduced to this place from one of the best Geology professors, whom I had the pleasure of learning from. We went here on a field trip, and it was during a time of year that wasn't the warmest (a fall semester), and the experience was both educational and wonderful. This is surely one of the most beautiful, locations I have been to, and looking back at the pictures I took, on that visit, and the many others since, makes me wish I could live here. Sometimes it is crowded, but that does not affect the unique beauty of the area. If you are bothered by the periodic crowding, there are many resources available online, to time your visit, for the best experience possible.
A great trail and love the rock scramble and climb up (about 45 degree angle) halfway thru. Good prep for the "real" rock scramble at Old Rag Mountain. Bring lots of water! Can be difficult for small children. No dogs allowed on trail.
Such a fun hike with great views along the way. Dress appropriately, especially shoes, and bring plenty of water. There are multiple overlooks above the water and from the high rocks, and other spots where you're right down at the river's edge. The rock climb is fun and lots of really cool terrain with huge boulders to navigate above and around. The last small part of the trail is totally in the woods heading back to the canal, and if you finish the loop you take the canal towpath back up to the parking lots. One of the best hikes close to DC.
