A great weekend trip on the Lower Yough. Fun small group! Dave Ritchie led the way to 2 perfect days on the river. Dave is experienced, calm and a lot of fun. Keep rocking it with Dave Calleva, he is a great leader!!

The kayaking program is awesome. Learned a lot! The instructor (Tom and another sweet young lady) was so great, experienced and patient. Highly recommend their classes.

Calleva’s Liquid Adventures offers the best whitewater kayak instruction in the DC area.

I started paddling in 2013 with another DC kayak school. The primary instructor at this school was highly focused on getting students' rolls dialed in. The general vibe was one of fear: the instructor portrayed paddling as an act of surviving a river full of hazards with magic pill of a bomb-proof roll. We stayed in the same place on the Potomac for every lesson, and I started to feel like I would be stuck at the Class II skill level indefinitely.

This is when I found Calleva’s Liquid Adventures and Tom McEwan. In stark contrast to the previous school, Calleva treated the river as a classroom where students could challenge themselves with measured risks under the watchful eye of skilled instructors. Flipping and swimming went from being a terrifying experience to a learning opportunity. Classes took me to different parts of the Potomac and other rivers, which helped me learn to read water and solidify my technique lessons through application in a wide variety of situations. One can’t claim to know how to ferry well if you can only do it well on three eddy lines below the Maryland Chute! Ultimately, this school builds confident, adaptable boaters, instead of fearful kayak rollers.

I picked up with their Cheat Training program in spring of 2015 and learned more in those 8 weeks than I did in over 18 months with the other school. I’ve since done all sorts of training programs with them, paddling everything from big water to technical creeks to artificial slalom courses. In less than two years with Calleva-LAKS, I’ve gone from white-knuckling my way down Class II+ in a creek boat to confidently leading my friends on the Lower Gauley in a playboat.

One more thing: the community of paddlers and instructors around this school is great. It’s diverse, welcoming, and generally very positive. None of the instructors give off the exclusive, self-absorbed “I’m-more-interested-in-showing-off-my-flatwater-playboating-moves-than-teaching” type of Brochacho vibe. All the paddlers seem to be invested in one goal: making sure that everybody has a great day on the river.

I have done three of the Liquid Adventures advanced whitewater kayak trainings, along with my 16-year old son. The instruction is amazing, and both of us have made incredible progress in our paddling. I would recommend their programs wholeheartedly. They are great fun, and you will definitely take your skills to a whole new level.

I have been climbing the whitewater kayaking learning curve since May of 2016. After 9 months of slow progress, I joined the Calleva's Liquid Adventures kayak school Cheat Lite training. In eight weeks, I made very rapid progress during our week night practice sessions and our weekend river runs. Dave, Travis, and Joe did a fantastic job creating a team environment and moving us all along the learning curve so we were ready to paddle the Class 4 Cheat Canyon. I strongly recommend the Liquid Adventure training programs and trips!!
