We have an 8 year old cat with mast cell tumors and he is alive because of the medical care and knowledge of those at VRA. He's hanging strong after four years of care. UPDATE. He crossed the Rainbow Bridge peacefully in April 2018.
Our shelter rescue 10 month old puppy was diagnosed with the kidneys of a 13 year old dog. We took her to VRA where she spent 10 days on fluids and meds. She was cared for by a team of caring, smart and wonderful doctors and staff. Even though we had only had her for less than a week we were allowed to visit her every day.
To this day every time we take her for follow up visits everyone who cared for her two years ago comes out to see her and she loves them all.
She just turned 4 years old in October. Something that would have not been possible without the help of the VRA staff and others along the way.
Yes, it's expensive, but if you can give your dog or cat the medical expertise of VRA it's worth it.
The only thing I regret is that they are not closer to where we live but it's worth the trip.
Joey was 12 and a half, he acted 4 most of the time and was named after Joey Tribbiani because he loved food so much. When he got completely lethargic and wouldn't even eat chicken at 11:30 p.m., we panicked and took him to VRA. The tech on duty, Lori, took him in while I could barely get the words "trouble breathing" out without crying. Dr. Amelia Espina had the unpleasant work of diagnosing him with a massive tumor in his stomach and metastasis in the lungs, none of which had even been suspected by his vets at Banfield. By 3:45 that morning my boy was gone and our family was completely devastated. In what may be the worst memory of my life to date, I will never forget the kindness and genuine sympathy in Dr. Espina's eyes and voice; she hadn't known Joey before, but somehow I could tell this was painful for her too. The technicians, Lori and Raisa, took care of my Joey in his last hours and I know he was in good and caring hands. We had to make the most painful decision of our lives that night, and I know if it hadn't been for Dr. Espina's honesty and compassion, we would have agonized over it for days.
I owe them my eternal gratitude, and I would give anything to be able to have a regular vet for Joey's brother who is as competent, thorough, dedicated, selfless and humane as the vets at VRA.
My cat got a roach trap stuck on his paw. I rushed him to this emergency vet, which was the only one open at the time. He was treated with love, kindness and compassion, and they took care of him inside of a minute - for no charge. I can't recommend this vet highly enough. Thank you so much for loving my cat.
This place is great! I'm not sure why there are more than a few negative reviews, but our experience was extremely positive. In reading reviews, anytime I see a lot of grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors, I immediately discount the accuracy of their reported experience. Yes, medical care for your pet is expensive. Yes, people can make errors when quoting pricing over the phone. Yes, employees at a veterinary surgical center are humans and can get stressed out and fatigue just like everyone else. And yes, sometimes you can spend a lot of money and not get any real answers, and that sucks, but that's life.
I was referred to this place for radiation of an Osteosarcoma (bone tumor), on my 12.5 year old dog's rib. Difficult to treat, to say the least. The staff at the front was helpful and polite, Dr. McGowan was engaged, professional, warm, and knew her stuff. The Radiation Tech Mike (apologies if I botched the job title) who administered the treatment was organized, very friendly and welcoming to dogs and people, and took good care of my old sick dog who has acute anxiety during Vet visits. They even made the effort to schedule us between rush hour times, so we didn't get crushed on the DC and Baltimore highways (we came from northern Baltimore County). And, to top it all off, a couple weeks after her last treatment, they called to follow up and check on her. Good people doing good things at this facility.
I was from out of town, and had an emergency with my older Yorkie at night. We rushed her there and the staff was great. Unfortunately it was her time, I knew it would be coming sooner or later but always hoped later. They really were super, the hospital is very nice. It's such a tough situation to have to go through, especially when you are out of town.
