“One of my favorite bus stops in Maryland. The reason why I like this bus stop is because it has got interesting history. Apparently the bus stops in Mount Rainier such as this stop located at the intersection of Rhode Island Avenue (U.S. Route 1) & 34th Street, the bus stop located on the opposite side of Rhode Island Avenue (Route 1) & 34th Street, the bus stops located at the intersection of 34th Street & Bunker Hill Road, the bus stops located at the intersection of 34th Street & Otis Street, the bus stops located at the intersection of Rhode Island Avenue (U.S. Route 1) & 37th Street, the bus stop located at the intersection of Municipal Place & Rhode Island Avenue (U.S. Route 1), and the bus stops located at Eastern Avenue NE & Rhode Island Avenue (U.S. Route 1), were all historic streetcar stops. Certain streetcars that used to serve the Mount Rainier, MD have had only slight changes to their routes such as the B2 Bladensburg-Anacostia Streetcar Line, the F2 Chillum Road Streetcar Line (its sister route F3 was replaced by F1), the 82 Streetcar Line which mainly has been replaced by routes 81 and 83 between Mount Rainier and the Cherry Hill Campground in College Park, MD though route 82 still exists to serve short trips between the Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station and Mount Rainier during rush hours and early morning/ late night periods when bus service is otherwise limited. Service west of the Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station to Potomac Park has been removed ever since the Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station opened in March, 1976. The train tracks the 82 streetcar line used to use on Route 1 are still existent and mainly used for cargo trains. The 84 & 85 streetcar lines have traveled between Downtown Washington D.C. all the way up to Riverdale before being rerouted in 1976 to terminate at the Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station. In 1978, these streetcar lines were extended from their original terminus behind the Eastpine Shopping Center in Riverdale, MD to serve the newly opened New Carrollton Metro Station. Bus route 86 is simply a mere combination of parts of the 82, G4, and G6 streetcar lines. This route shares the same routes as bus routes 81,82,83,84,85, and T18 between the Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station up to the bus stop at Rhode Island Avenue & 37th Street. After that, 81 and 83 continue straight on Rhode Island Avenue (Route 1) through Brentwood, North Brentwood, Hyattsville, Riverdale, University Park, and College Park. The 86 bus route, on the other hand; turns left onto 38th Street (MD Route 208), which it uses throughout Brentwood and through a small portion of Hyattsville when it becomes 38th Avenue. Unlike 81 and 83, this bus route does not go through North Brentwood at all. The bus route then turns right onto Hamilton Street by Magruder Park/ the Hamilton Manor Splash Pool, then makes a left onto 40th Avenue, right onto Oglethorpe Street, left onto 42nd Avenue, another left onto Queensbury Road, which becomes Belcrest Road, a left at the Prince Georges Plaza Metro Station, left on Belcrest Road, right on East West Highway, and left onto Baltimore Avenue (Route 1) in Riverdale where it rejoins bus routes 81 and 83. Routes 84,85, and T18 make a right from Rhode Island Avenue onto 38th Street (MD Route 208), which becomes 38th Avenue after crossing the railroad tracks from Brentwood into Cottage City, a left on Bladensburg Road which becomes Annapolis Road (MD Route 450) in Bladensburg, MD. 84 and 85 then divert left onto Edmonston Road (MD Route 769C) in Bladensburg, MD,leaving T18 behind on Annapolis Road, which it uses to directly get to the New Carrollton Metro Station. Routes 84 and 85 travel on Edmonston Road through Rogers Heights, running parallel to Kenilworth Avenue (MD Route 201) until they eventually rejoin just before Riverdale. 84 and 85 turn right onto Riverdale Road, 84 itself turns right into the Eastpine Shopping Center, while 85 goes straight on Riverdale Road. They both turn left onto Auburn Avenue, right onto Good Luck Road, and do a few more turns.”
