Some very cool history here, as well as architecture, the wall is about 18ft tall and 3ft thick, was built in 1700s and after three wars, in the 1920s only 8ft of the wall was standing tall around, and they decided to rebuild it as it would have looked when it was first built. We didn’t go on a tour day but got to still go look for ourselves. Something to go see and be able to say I’ve been there ????????????♀️
Great star fort in the Maryland state park system. Visitor's center has a few exhibits, sundries for sale, a 10 minute orientation video, bathrooms and helpful rangers. Fort itself is 5 minute walk on paved trail. Fort is well restored and interesting. Easily muddy so prepare for that if visiting after a rain.
We went here in Spring for the the Old Time fair and it was a wonderful experience seeing everyone dressed and camping in period clothes and equipment. Some amazing wares and crafts for sale as well. The fort itself is beautiful with huge stone walls and a gorgeous spot overlooking the river. Although the fort never saw any action in the French and Indian war it's a nice place to explore the history of an area that was once the frontier.
Historic, interesting, and lovely. We were the only visitors inside the fort on a beautiful weekday afternoon in November. A friendly welcoming staff member unlocked the barracks for us to view, and told us interesting facts about the fort, its construction, and daily life within. The grounds are well tended and historical items—both genuine and recreated—are on display. The Maryland Park Service is doing a great job in preserving and presenting this 262-year old icon from the French and Indian War period. We visited on a an uneventful weekday afternoon off-season, but weekend visitors will find more interpretive activities and exhibits. Check the website for special events. The location is lovely—woods and fields near the Potomac River. Nice visitors center, restrooms, picnic areas, and most pleasant and caring staff.
Lovely state park in Western Maryland. Important part of Maryland history. Rangers were great, very knowledgeable. Park grounds were beautifully maintained. Definitely worth a visit as part of a day trip, but there's also a campground. Accessible via the C&O Canal Towpath and Western Maryland Rail Trail if you're bicycling.
