My grandfather went to Blueberry Hill for short term rehab. Prior to his hospitalization, my grandfather was very independent. He drove, did the shopping and even took care of my grandma! He was outside shoveling snow when he slipped and fell. My grandma called 911 and he went to Beverly Hospital. He was told he had a fractured hip and after surgery he would need short term rehab. My dad and I did the leg work for my grandma and grandfather and toured the local rehab facilities. We really like Blueberry Hill as soon as we walked in. All the bedrooms have big bright window, with electric beds, flat screen tvs and a personal telephone. We decided on Blueberry for short term rehab and my grandfather was transferred there that afternoon. He enjoyed his stay. Everyone was very helpful and made him feel welcomed and comfortable. During his stay, the staff kept us informed and invited us for a meeting to discuss the discharge plan which we found very helpful as we did not know what to expect in a rehab/nursing facility, as this was our first encounter. He stayed about 3 weeks and discharged home completely independent and back to his daily routine! We would highly recommend Blueberry Hill and are very thankful for the care they gave to my grandfather.

Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation- Blueberry Hill
    Success Story: Mr. John P.

John P is a 65 year old gentleman who has been reasonably healthy most of his life. As a young man, John began working in a local coal mine. Sadly, the excessive dust exposure led to a collapsed lung and health scare for John. Determined to get the most out his life, John put his energy towards his favorite talent, singing, and eventually established himself as a professional singer.

Hundreds of songs later, John was diagnosed with head, neck and throat cancer, once again threatening his ability to create joy out of music. But with a strong and positive attitude, John began battling his disease with numerous treatments of chemotherapy and radiation. In November of 2011, John successfully completed these rigorous treatments.

In December of 2011, John's lungs got the best of him again and he was admitted to the hospital with bilateral aspiration pneumonia which was complicated by a lung abscess. Unable to swallow (or sing) John received a G-tube for nutrition. While facing multiple relapses which resulted in several re hospitalizations for recurrent aspiration pneumonia, John's psychosocial wellbeing was affected. He became overwhelmed by his medical condition. It was here in his journey, that he found himself at Blueberry Hill for a short term rehab stay.

Exhausted and overwhelmed by his recurrent medical conditions, John was losing hope. However, during these challenging times, John was able to overcome these obstacles he faced on a day to day basis with the encouragement and support from the interdisciplinary team at Blueberry Hill. While at Blueberry, he was followed by the nursing staff, a respiratory therapist, the rehabilitation team and our Medical Director, who is a pulmonologist. John received aggressive therapy from our respiratory, physical, occupational, and speech therapists. Treatment included chest therapy, supplemental oxygen and nebulizer treatments, as well as, educating John on his condition. John had rediscovered his determination and became very involved in his discharge planning with the ultimate goal to return home independently.

John eventually reached the point where he could be weaned off oxygen and was walking on his own without any device or assistance. Each and every day he became stronger and stronger. John was eventually discharged back home and continues to succeed! The staff at Blueberry Hill is proud to have watched such a remarkable man make such a remarkable recovery, even when all odds seemed stacked against him. This is a story that shows what Blueberry Hill stands for; to restore hope, healing and recovery.
