  Looking for a true college prep school? Parnassus is it! The staff is very dedicated and hard working. Yes, the curriculum is hard, but you get out what you put in. Preparing for a top tier university is hard and not for everyone, but students are much better in academics and becoming respectful citizens than they ever would be in a traditional public school.

  This school's pretty decent. If you don't screw around in the hallway all the time and actually give your schoolwork some effort, you'll find it pretty enjoyable. Definitely feel smarter since I came here. Only real con would be the lack of sports teams. Plus, the teachers got yeeted by the students in the students vs. staff basketball game.

  Great school with excellent curriculum. My 8th grader joined this school in 3rd grade. He has always got all support from teachers and school staff. Like other schools all teachers cant be perfects but most of the teachers work hard and try to go above and beyond to help scholars.
  Only drawback I notice is lack of sports activities, which definitely needs to be improved.

  Parnassus is a charter school, which means it is a tuition-free public school. All charters have a specific focus. Parnassus’s is that is a “classical” school, which means that it is built on a knowledge-rich curriculum focused on the “great works” From K-4, students are in the School of Grammar. It focuses on exposure to a ton of knowledge and mastery of those facts. From 5-8, students are in the School of Logic. At this stage, they learn to organize and articulate those facts into logical arguments. From 9-12, the students are in the School of Rhetoric. Here, they use accumulated knowledge and logic skills to formulate and defend their own ideas. Preparing and defending a senior thesis is a graduation requirement. Funds and energy are very much channeled to academics, resulting in a physical space that is Spartan (the school is in what used to be a strip mall) not luxurious. There is an emphasis on character development and leadership skills.
  
  Academically, Parnassus covers a lot of ground and expects a lot. In the lower school, kids are grouped (in each grade) by skill level, and are either working at grade level or above grade level – there is no below grade level group. There is homework every night. The homework is not “busy work,” it reinforces the lessons taught that day. Each night there is math, reading, spelling and language homework, and sometimes review material for history and science tests. Kids are expected to memorize and recite poetry, honing their public speaking skills from an early age. The emphasis is on actual mastery, not memorizing something to pass the test then immediately forgetting it. That means frequent low-stakes tests with old material constantly mixed in with new material. Tests account for 70% of the grade.
  
  In addition to the homework and nightly math fact practice, kids are expected to read for a certain amount of time each night – starting with 20 minutes a night in Kindergarten (reading TO children counts in Kindergarten) and increasing to 90 minutes a night in 9th grade. The school asks families to make sure that the kids have a steady diet of classical literature, with occasional “dessert books” (like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson) thrown in for fun.
  
  Parnassus students learn three foreign languages. Daily Spanish instruction begins in Kindergarten; Latin instruction is added in the third grade; Greek is added in ninth grade. The atmosphere is highly formal. Uniforms are required. Kids address the teachers and staff as Mr. and Ms. (and the staff address each other that way too). Kids must stand up when they answer a question in class. Holidays are not celebrated at school. There are no “funny hat” days or “wear your pajamas to school” days, though the kids do have a history day once a year where they can dress up. There are also fun after-school events that are tied to the curriculum.
  
  We are fortunate to have a choice in public education. Parnassus is not the traditional district school and it is very different than most charter schools. There are pros and cons to all of them. If a rigorous, classical education that will challenge your kids is what you want, Parnassus is a great choice. Just know that it is not easy – for students or parents. Nightly homework plus reading minutes can be a struggle. But there is no question that the school does what it claims to – provides kids with a classical education that demands their best in intellectual achievement and character development.
