This place is so named because you can't find it. If you use Google Maps, it takes you on a goose chase -behind- the woods, to a moss-covered set of stair that leads, surprisingly, not to the woods, but to a subdivision. The REAL entrance is off Barrett Station Road across from the Kirkwood Gardens nursery. The only signage is a small sign (shown), which leads to 8 paved parking spots and the trailhead. The woods themselves are completely unimproved: earthen path, no other signs of civilization except one log bench near the back. The path is irregular and uneven, even steep in places. If you want to completely escape civilization, here you are!
Legacy of Ray Moore, the creator of phantom comics. This place talks for itself.
One time must visit if you were a fan of phantom comics
weird I drove past it the first time and I couldn't find the other one. it was back in the neighborhood itself and I didn't notice any parking still I didn't learn somebody's house or it showed her between the houses but the other one was right up front on the main road right before the neighborhood small parking lot maybe 12 or 15 cars either and drinking fountain I think it didn't seek notice it was on or not but Walmart laid out trailhead right up front should the trail nice little neighborhood park and it didn't take very long to walk the trail either it was a quick loop but then I connected nothing to that something else there was another parking lot park and then one more so I guess they're all intertwined I'm inside it's very nice I drove past that several times before and I've never really noticed it but it is worth noticing now. on the bicycle next time.. lol
The easiest way into Bittersweet Woods CA is to start at the Phantom Forest CA parking lot. The two are connected by trails. Entrance off Hunter Creek Ridge Road, off Barret Station Rd. The path between the 2 runs behind some back yards, along the fences. If you want to start from Bittersweet, Google maps sends to to the wrong street. Correct location is marked by the deer sign, and power line right of way, on Winding Trail Lane.
