Desert National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center

  Visitors Center: this section of the refuge is beautifully developed, but we did not see many birds during the hours of four to six p.m.
  The area is a classic example of the basin and range province, that is, long, narrow mountains bordering long, flat desert valleys.
  The birds we caught glimpses of were a pair of Pyrrhuloxia (a large gray cardinal), a pair of White-crowned Sparrows, and a Virginia Rail. One American Coot and a pair of crows made themselves very obvious in the pond area.

  Small but well done visitors center. The displays were engaging to my kids and really informative. We also walked on the trails to see the pond amd aquarium where they are preserving an endangered desert fish and snail that were almost wiped out by invasive species brought in to the area. Beautiful oasis of mesquite trees and a running spring in the middle of a dry desert landscape. The center has informative displays about Why you find oases like this (geologically speaking) and information about native people that lived in the area.

  Found a hidden gem in Nevada. The refuge was very interesting. There are tons of hiking trails. The staff was friendly and helpful. I will go back to explore more.

  Great place. We didn't stay long because it was a bit chilly but will definitely visit again when the weather is warmer.

  This place is gigantic, and all of it is gorgeous. If you're new to the Mojave Desert this is a great place to become more familiar with it. Start at the visitor station and learn how and why this place is so special. The people who work and volunteer will go way above their job description to help you have fun and learn about the environment of the area. There are lots of places to hike, from easy wheelchair accessible paths to extreme wilderness adventures. Remember, it's in a desert. It isn't always hot but it is almost always dry. Drink water, a lot of it.
