The short review: I’m a longtime, very satisfied customer of Max’s. I recommend them without reservation. Max’s has good mechanics, good service, they are honest and dependable. I trust them completely with my car care, and that they won’t take advantage of me like a lot of mechanics do.

The longer review: First, a little about me. I’m not rich, and usually drive an older car, but I’m careful to keep it well maintained. I’m not a mechanic, and don’t know much about car maintenance, except for simple things (I’m comfortable topping off the fluids, changing the oil, oil filter, air filter, sometimes the spark plugs, replacing fuses, and changing windshield wipers, etc.). I leave the rest to the pros.
I’ve been a satisfied customer of Max’s for around 20 years. I live in Philly, so must get my car inspected here. At most places, if your car doesn’t pass inspection, they give you an estimate for the required repairs to be done there. Before I found out about Max’s, I’d usually get my car inspected at Pep Boys in Philly and the repairs were always expensive. One year they gave me an estimate for roughly $1,800, which seemed way too steep. I asked around for recommendations for a good mechanic… dependable, affordable, honest, etc. A friend recommended Max’s over in Voorhees, NJ. It was a little bit of a trek for me, but I thought I’d give them a try. I met Max, asked him if he could fix my (older) car at an affordable price without cutting corners on safety. He said he’d work with me on the price (suggesting things like after market parts rather than OEM parts, etc, which was fine with me as long as they were safe & dependable). They fixed the car for about a third of the Pep Boys estimate, and it passed inspection. And the car ran beautifully. I started taking my car there regularly. Max’s estimates have always come in well under the estimates from the PA state inspection places in Philly (usually between 1/3 to 1/2 the price), and the car has always passed inspection.
In the last few years, when it’s time to get my car inspected, I simply take it to Max’s first, tell them to go over it, make sure it’s safe, that everything is in order, and that it will pass inspection. If it doesn’t need work, they tell me. If it does, they give a reasonable quote, and then do the repairs. They keep my car running smoothly & dependably. And it passes inspection every time.
Another telling experience: I used to drive an older model Ford, and once it needed a repair that required a bolt that had two different possible sizes depending exactly on when it was made. Pep Boys wouldn’t even give an estimate because they said the car was no longer in production and they couldn’t find out from Ford exactly which of the two bolts was used in my car. So they couldn’t do the repair at any price. I then tried the Ford dealership. They offered to repair it, but the estimate was prohibitively expensive. I took it to Max’s and they simply ordered both size bolts, picked the one that fit, and fixed the car for way less than the other two options. I don’t remember if I simply paid for the unused bolt or if they returned it. Doesn’t matter. They solve things, do great repairs and they work with you on price. Yep, I’m a very satisfied customer!
