Montclair Hawkwatch

Great place but hard to find! Enter address into GPS and it’ll bring you to a residential road (you’re in the right spot), park in the small parking lot, and walk down the road and you’ll see two metal posts on your right that go to a trail. The gate will most likely be closed but you can hike around it in the left side, it’s a little steep, and there’s a lot of broken glass so be careful! Once you get to the top it’s a beautiful view! Directly across is another lookout area, part of the Leanape Trail, which is easier to get to. Go back to the parking lot and enter the trail, stay to your right and walk along the ridge (the road will be on your right) for about .25 mile until you get to the top. There’s a bench up there too! Enjoy!

I have been around this area and did not pay much attention to the "Hawk" watching until I saw one. Though a little slow with my camera, it was a quite a sight.

Nice walk up to the locked gate 10 AM on Tuesday 7/10/18. Sign says it opens up 9/1/18.

Beautiful views to the East and West. A Hawk Watcher is on duty from 9-5 each day in the spring, summer and fall to count the hawks on their migrations. In 2017 it was Chris Payne. Nice guy, happy to chat while diligently fulfilling his duty.
