This review is long overdo. I don’t have a google account, so I’m writing this from my husbands, but I wish to convey how wonderful our experience has been thus far at The Empowered Learning Center.
The name in itself is truly a reflection of this unique little gem that we’ve been attending for the last several months. I had originally toured Empowered Learning four years ago, but at the time, we weren’t in a position to make the commitment. I also felt a bit overwhelmed by the principal’s, philosophy, and methods, however when conventional methods weren’t working for our son (he had not been successful in school despite the many different approaches being utilized), who has a dual diagnosis of ADHD and Asperger syndrome, we knew we needed to try a different approach. So, four years after touring Empowered Learning Center, I went back and this time, both my husband and I felt ready to commit and try something different. Still, we were cautiously optimistic as we’ve had many disappointments in the past with regards to our sons social, emotional, and academic progress.
Within the first week, I noticed a difference in him. I noticed it in quirky ways, nonetheless there was an obvious change in him! I first noticed the difference in video games. He went from playing for two to three minutes (and losing immediate interest) to twenty to thirty minutes, and that was just the first week. By the second, third, and fourth week, he was sitting and attending for over an hour! Finally, our son was attentive to something. This was also a wonderful opportunity for him to engage in an activity with a peer that was socially acceptable as his idea of fun would normally be to take apart an air conditioner, or look at different garbage disposals. Now, I know to most people, playing video games for a longer period of time wouldn’t be a success, but for us, it was. At ten, our son wasn’t even reading, and not bc he didn’t have the mental capacity to learn to read, but bc he wasn’t able to sit, attend, and focus, so having him focus by playing video games for over an hour felt in someways as a miracle.
“Have you made any changes to his medications,” my sister in law asked us two months in followed by the same question the following month by both his teacher as well as the school principal. Now, our son is currently reading and writing! He definitely has a long way to go, and is still behind academically and not at grade level, but I/we have to be cautious to not compare him to other children his age and to just look at where he was when he first began Empowered Learning, and where he is now, it’s awe-inspiring.
Jeff is a very down-to earth, friendly, warm, and an intuitive teacher. I’ve been observing his teaching style on and off for months, and it’s moving to me. He teaches every child differently based upon the individual needs of the child. There’s also a Rene, Liz, John, and Sean there as well, who teach some of the classes. They are all really committed and pretty wonderful too, and I’m fairly certain that anyone who works there also practices the principles of Empowered Learning.
I highly recommend this establishment. The only downside in our opinion, which some may not even consider to be a downside is that when we don’t come, or say we miss a few sessions due to illness, vacation, or time away for any reason, I/we see a difference in his focus/cognition as he’s not as clear and focused. Jeff says that we are just not all the way there yet. I’ve spoken to other parents of children who have graduated and reached a place where they (and Jeff) feel the child has reached their highest potential. I would agree with Jeff in that were not there yet, but I do feel quite satisfied and incredibly thankful with where were at now as he’s made so much progress, and I believe he will continue to do so. It sounds cliché(ish), but it’s also not always about the designation. The journey of watching someone evolve, especially that of your child, is quite remarkable.

We are so impressed with ELC ! It is for sure a hidden gem. Our son is learning visual memorization and using it daily in all facets of school and sports. The programs and gym at ELC have proven to help him use all functions of the brain simultaneously and having ADHD that has always been a problem. He loves coming to class!! We highly recommend!!
