Church of the Presidents Museum

A very interesting historical property. Volunteers help to maintain. Worth a visit when in the area to see where many famous presidents worshiped. Also locally is the monument when President Garfield died. (The presidents home no longer exists, the area is a development of private homes). A great location to learn about the history of the area and what the Long Branch / early Jesrsey Shore was like in the 19th and 20 century before the area was developed.

Used to be an Art/Jewelry Show there week of 4th Of July 1960's. Recall using 1st ever paycheck to buy 'Four Winds' earings by Verun Maylath. Always an interesting experience.

Happy to see the renovations being done, because when went thru Home20 1993, there were 1 or 2 puppy size container trailers parked amidst overgrown grass; and, i wondered whether the advent of the Ferry Boat to NYC in Atlantic Highlands meant the death knell for 7-Presidents Church & Museum, due to high end daily/weekly bedroom commuters driving up real estate prices and taxes. Pleased to see the place hanging on.

Sad, however, that decade+ or so back, that the 35-Acre remnant of the old Gugenheim estate fell to Eminent Domain . That was a sad day; especially, since the folks living there had a Long Term Lease & had acquired nonprofit status and worked with 'At Risk' youth.
Ah well. Only recently learned plinking around on the internet that James Fusco, who originated said nonprofit & Lease, passed away in a motor cycle accident back in 1993. That was hard to believe. Only had ever seen him tool around in old oxidized red pick-up, usually after a storm when he went to the beach searching for good drift wood for projects and coral fences near horse barn. So, belated condolences there.

And, condolences to the lovely mature woods, Long Branch's last(right?), felled by that developer. aaarrrggghhh!
