There are no hikes from the visitor center. Other than getting a brochure that showed us the different hikes, we didn't find much point to stopping there. The actual center was closed. There was a video playing outside and rangers stationed to answer questions.
The hike was undulating, easy, sandy. In order to see more than the most obvious Petroglyphs, you'll have to slow down. We were meandering and saw tons but so many were breezing through, there's no way they saw most of them. There were no Petroglyphs on the backside of the hike so we picked up our pace then.
We hiked on a pretty cool day and still it was warm next to the volcanic rock, so I am sure that this hike gets hot on warmer days.
What a fantastic trip to see ancient art in the wild. These stone on stone etchings are just beautiful to see and when you think of the age it is just hard to imagine. Take some time. Walk the dog (on a leash). Stay on the path and bring a telephoto lense and binoculars to see this beauty.
It was a beautiful sunny day. Saw lots of petroglyphs, make sure you bring a zoom lens or binoculars. The trai is sandy make sure you wear proper shoes also.
Very interesting. There is a visitor center (interior closed) not near any trails. Three separate trail locations. One had short (and steep) routes to petroglyphs. Others had longer hikes. Glyphs are small, usually less than a foot in diameter, one per basalt bolder.
Visitor center open daily from 10 am to 4 pm. Get to visitor center and it's closed, don't worry, you can hike at Rinconada or Piedras Marcadas Canyon til sunset. See map at VC gate parking lot.
