There is an moderate trail and a very challenging trail. The view at the top is amazing.
My favorite hike. A great workout with incredible views
Toughest terrain I've ever hiked, steep and rocky, and by rocky, I mean it's solid rock. This hike is no casual walk in the woods, the Breakneck ridge trail is a nearly vertical hands and feet rock scramble. If you can't climb the rocks, don't take the Breakneck Ridge trail, take Breakneck Bypass or the Brook and Notch Trails up, to avoid the Scramble.
Breakneck ridge is a popular hiking trail in the hudson highlands park just north of Cold Spring. Accessible by a metro north train from midtown Manhattan it's a great one day adventure for city folks and locals alike. The hike is best known for the short steep scramble up the ridge some 1100 feet elevation in about half a mile with multiple challenging technical sections and breathtaking views of the Hudson river. Most day hikers do the 3.7 mile loop back to rt 9D which is only a tiny portion of the trail system that goes on for miles north and east, providing access to the firetower at Beacon among other cool places. Breakneck ridge sees a lot of use in the warm months with most of its trailhead parking areas packed on weekends. To avoid the crowds go early in the morning or later in the afternoon. The hike itself is challenging and strenuous. Make sure to bring proper footwear, some food and other hiking essentials. Most importantly, take plenty of water, a hat for sun protection and a map of the area. Unprepared people become stranded on the ridge with unfortunate regularity. Stay safe and enjoy nature!
One of the best hiking trails near NYC! Make sure you get there early. The breakneck trail is 3 to 4 hours long without a break. Its and amazingly challenging trail that will leave you wanting to go back.
