We live very close to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Center. We visit often and go on beautiful walk through the trails. We get to see amazing Birds, and learn about all of the creatures that live there in the visitor center. they also have organized learning experiences for kids which we like to go to a few times a year. for example, the kids got to paint their own bird houses one time. Another time they got to examine, and dissect owl pellets. That was their favorite.

A lovely place to enjoy nature ,breath and relax. You can rent a binoculars in exchange of a valid ID,the nature center is modern clean and the staff is friendly there are some cute things to buy in the shop . The walk is easy 1.7 miles around a lake. You can see many birds and wildlife. A relaxing Oasis in the busiest city.

Historically a great place for birds but not so much after after Hurricane Sandy. With the breach of the West Pond much of the waterfowl was no longer attracted to Jamaica Bay, the East Pond continues to be a great attraction for Shorebirds and the East Pond is more birder friendly in terms of being able to get close enough to the birds to see what they are but usually you're in a flooded area. Not impossible but you need to know what you're doing. The West Pond continues to be less birder friendly as it has always been even with the repair of the breach and time will tell if the birds return.

This is a WONDERFUL place. My hubby took us there for a nature walk, and it was the most unbelievable nature walk in a long time! It's amazing to see so much nature in one piece of land that hasn't been destroyed by humans...my girls had a wonderful time they even have a booklet with some activities for the kids to write about things they saw as well as important information about the refuge and National Parks, at the end they got a Rangers badge after raising their right hand and promising to respect and protect nature! It was such a moment! There are two nest platforms for Ospreys that were there as we walked! They actually nest in these platforms and you could see them up close. Bring your ID and they will lend you binoculars (if you dont own one) so you can see the birds up close. There are landmarks for turtle eggs too! So much to see i hardly got space to tell. For a family day this is THE place to visit to have an unforgettable time and for creating memories with our children. Put sunblock on, bring water and baseball caps and go in. So much to see, enjoy and learn. There is nothing like teaching our children about protecting nature, this planet is our only home and we should be more diligent protecting it. Definitely recommend this place highly!!!
