I was here for a beach cleanup with a group from a non-profit organization called HarborLab. It's a nice peaceful island, although sadly, terribly littered with debris.
The NYC Urban Park Rangers lead occasional canoe excursions to this restored nature preserve from the Salt Marsh Nature Center It is hard to believe you are in the same New York City as the skyscrapers of Manhattan.
I've kayaked here a few times and the beach is quite nice, although a bit dirty. There is a nice view of the creek from White Island.
(718) 421-2021 Car: Belt Parkway to Kings Plaza exit, then north on Flatbush Avenue to Avenue U. Turn left on Avenue U and continue west for ten blocks. Pass 33rd Street and look for the parking lot on the right. Bus: B46, B2, or B41 to Kings Plaza, transfer for the westbound B3 bus to East 33rd Street and Avenue U.
