Great location for camping or just spending the day! Great views and very peaceful. About a 1 1/2 mile hike heading north from the red Ramapo-Dunderberg Trailhead on Route 106. There are a few parking spots there at the trailhead. Checked with NYS Park Police and overnight parking is allowed. Came up on a Friday afternoon in mid-October 2018 and spent the night tented out behind the shelter. There were two others camping in the shelter and four others tenting around the shelter along with me. Everyone was quiet and friendly. Only issue was that around 1030pm a group of about 10 guys showed up and set up camp. They were loud, drinking, and shining their headlamps around for a while, which was annoying. Other issue is firewood. Get in early and bring a camping saw/axe and prepare to scavenge for a while. Also, it can get quite windy. All in all, will camp there again!
Awesome area, great place to post up and explore from.
Great hike from the South. Left Tuxedo, took Triangle trail North to Parker Cabin Mountain. Continued North on Ramapo Dunderburg over Tom Jones Mountain and then up Black Rock Mountain to the Shelter area. Spent a tent night above the shelter. Water sources in Harriman dry up in summer, make sure to carry or filter before arriving to camp.
Fire place. Nice view. Good rest shelter
This campsite has one of the most gorgeous and panoramic views in Harriman. The trails up to it are very challenging, both for hiking and navigating the complex junctions. There is a water source about 100 yards and 100' lower in elevation, filter required. The downside is it is very exposed. A squall blew in and nearly blew our tents off the mountain. If a thunder storm had passed overhead, I would have been very concerned about a lightning strike. Check the weather before deciding to camp here.
