Beautiful easy hike through the site of an important historical foundry. Through marsh and woods. The reclamation and cleanup of this former Superfund site is remarkable. Markers along the path inform about the site's history. One lovely intact building fun 1865. The hike can take you along the river to a falls, before either looping back to its start, or ending up near the Putnam History Museum, where you can learn more about the foundry and the history of the area. The history museum's building was originally the foundry school, for young apprentices and workers' children.
Great historical site. Nice walking trails and interpretive signs
This is a nice place to walk and take in some interesting industrial history. The trails are short and mostly level, though a few rise up the hillside and are a teeny but rough in places. Easily accessible from Cold Spring, even by foot from the MetroNorth station.
Very clean, and peaceful. The trails are maintained well, and there is plenty of information about the history of the mill posted as you walk. The parking lot is gravel, and has a clean public restroom.
So beautiful and interesting. And almost nobody knows about it it seems. There were only a few people there on a sunny weekend day.

Of the four historic ironworks selected by President James Madison to supply artillery to the U.S. military, only West Point Foundry remains. Operating from 1818-1911, the foundry gained renown during the Civil War by producing Parrott guns, cannons whose range and accuracy gave the North a distinct advantage (prompting a visit from President Abraham Lincoln in 1862).

Chosen as one of 4 sites for a weapons foundry by President James Madison after the War of 1812, West Point Foundry gained renown during the Civil War, when it produced the Parrott gun, whose rifling gave it greater range and accuracy (President Abraham Lincoln visited the foundry in 1862 to witness a Parrott gun demonstration).
