Expansive nature preserve only an hour away from NYC.
Hundreds miles of well marked trails, more than 30 lakes, about a dozen of shelters, parking is available at many trailheads.
Plenty of wildlife - from chipmunks to bears. Countless hiking opportunities with all levels of difficulty - from easy strolls to overnight backpacking.
One of the highlights is the first ever section of Appalachian Trail - from Arden on Route 17 to Bear Mountain Bridge. Also a number of historical ruins and cemeteries.

A great park with free parking and hours/miles of trails to explore. It's an easy trip for city dwellers but it doesn't draw major crowds (like breakneck) so you'll actually feel like you're in nature (because.... You'll be in nature.)

Don't know if the trails are accurately rated for difficulty. The downward part of the loop is not as dog-friendly as stated on the website. But otherwise a perfectly great trail seeing NY's majesty with a good amount of challenging parts. Go in the fall!

Bike, run, swim, kayak and hike... whatever is your thing. Harriman has been for years great city escape for me. Off season it's extremely peaceful up there, and you can enjoy fall colors as safe roads, great hills, great lake views.
