Usually there's noise from distant leaf blowers, but you might get lucky. And it's always a beautiful and varied landscape (if I may use that word in its original and proper sense, rather than the euphemism for cacophony it has sadly become). If you study the site map you can do a long loop trail, returning via the curiously named Boney Lane. However you must watch carefully for the trail markers , because the path is sometimes overgrown or blocked by fallen trees. Also, remember the parking lot closes at 5 pm, even in summer.

Great place, quiet, a bit hard to find the entrance. Lovely variety of birds, with very strong kinglet numbers being the standout for this visit

Such a beautiful and peaceful spot on the North Shore to go for a scenic hike! You will walk down a long wide path with lots of low trees and wildlife darting in and out of the brush (rabbits, blue jays, etc...). When you enter into the forest, the trail narrows a bit and leads you around a small swamp which makes for pretty cool photos since it is surrounded by lots of foliage and tall trees. Once you get to the end, you will see the sound overlook. From there you can go to the left and head down to the beach where you can get a great expansive view across to CT. The bluffs are quite high and remind you that this is indeed the North Shore. The beach is also very rocky and littered with horseshoe crab remains as they wash up every so often. I would highly recommend visiting the sanctuary on any day. Just keep in mind that there are only 8 spots in the lot.

The David Weld Sanctuary is a beautiful place to take a hike on the trails and enjoy being in nature. The trails are beautiful and well-maintained, and there's even a nice picnic spot overlooking the beach. The paths are a little tough on strollers, though, so if you're taking a baby, keep that in mind. The only downside is that there are only something like six parking spaces, so it's a craps shoot on whether or not you can park and get in.

Okay, so here's the deal from start to finish.

The parking area only holds 6 vehicles. If it's filled up you'll have to park down the road a ways and possibly illegally.

The trail starts out very green, very wide(8+ feet) and very sunny(and hot) in a mid August at noon. The signs say no dogs. Good thing my 20lb black Chi-weenie identifies as a 6 year old girl. No matter because we never saw anyone on the trail during the 3.5 mile hike. The trail does eventually turn into a normal trail hike with turns and hills. We took the long route by adding the area marked with dotted lines which takes you to Boney lane where you can double back to the main trail marked in red on AllTrails map. It adds a mile and a quarter to the total trek.

The trail is 90% clear with the occasional spider web across the face, those crazy fleas that circle around your head and some thin thorny branch hanging in the path. I usually bring my clippers to do a little community service but forgot them this time. They weren't vital thankfully because the trail was very clear and well marked with yellow arrows on the trees.

We also saw some white tailed deer.

The highlight was definitely the beach view toward the end. There are at least 3 ways to get to the beach. The first one located on the return is a high up cliff that looks down. I do not recommend trying to get to the beach from there unless you fancy a broken leg. It is a beautiful view though with a bench to sit on. The second one also has a bench with green lawn and will give you access to the beach. The third one we didn't explore.

All in all, I highly recommend the David Weld Sanctuary trail.

Fall Adventures: The David Weld Sanctuary

I almost never enjoy the Fall. 'Tis the season of cold hands and sinus infections. No more Summer. No more warm weather. No more boating. This year, I'm intent on enjoying it. I bought myself some chai tea and ventured out into nature. Brought some friends along with me.
