(April 8, 2015, 7:47 pm)I had the pleasure of knowing Igor Gracie for several years now and as soon as I heard he opened up a Jiu Jitsu school in New York I had to visit. Man was I impressed! Talk about lineage...He is the grandson of the creator! The academy is kept very clean, it has a friendly and fun atmosphere, and Igor makes you feel like you're apart of the family. One standout of the academy is the kids program. His curriculum does a great job at teaching children. They learn self esteem, respect, and have fun doing it! Simply the best!
(January 31, 2015, 2:25 pm)The first thing to know about Igor Gracie Jiujitsu Academy is that there is conveniently located free off-street parking. When you enter you notice the gym is clean and you are greeted warmly. The staff is genuinely friendly, welcoming and kind, and not in the false sales-y way. how refreshing. One may feel intimidated to enter a physical martial art because of fears of the potential for violent injury, the frenetic pace, the meat-heads grunting and the wails of "do you even lift bro?!". None of that exists at this gym. The meat head ratio is very low, maybe 1 in 30. The environment is safe because being intelligently technical is applauded over brute strength. This creates a space which is welcoming to all abilities, body types and ages. The warmness of the instructors extends to the instruction of the children's classes which I have observed. I noticed the children are often "caught" doing the right thing and given attention and encouragement rather than only being reprimanded when they're doing wrong. The atmosphere of the academy is the calm eye of the martial arts storm. The closest thing to a perfect experience one can have while simulating physical combat.
